It's nice to see a pencil piece that isn't photo realism. Don't get me wrong I like those as well, but its nice to see the medium used in a different way. Since pencil smudges its nice to see an artist use that aspect of it, if indeed you used that technique. If not it still makes that connection for me when viewing this. The indistinct quality of the marks you used really give the piece that floating feeling that's so appropriate for the subject matter.

I understand what you mean. Photo realism is amazing but I adore the quality of the human touch on artwork. When I draw or paint I try to achieve more of what is sensed, felt, and imagined.
