One thing I love about your gallery is the repetition of subjects - trees, birds, but you're always keeping it new and exploring new ideas and perspectives. I love that.

I have been working on an altered books project and wanted to do something with some pages I tore out of the book. By the way, the book was being thrown away and I thought it could be put to use.

This is lovely--it's so simple and elegant. I love how the words extend into the ground, like roots.

Yes the words are the roots.

Encaustinc on paper sounds scary -I mean you have to use a lighter or something to burn, right?

It is something new. They call them "hot cakes". Very clever putting these in tins. I use an electric pancake griddle to heat the tins melting the wax and use the griddle as a palette too.

WOW this is incredible! I've always been afraid (literally) of encaustic because of the fire gun and the possibility of flammable situations with the resins and all... should find a way to have them shipped over here

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethFitts In reply to TeresaClark [2009-08-28 12:45:34 +0000 UTC]

Be prepared, they are a little expensive. I think so. Did you watch the videos they had on their website?
I hope you are able to get some of these. I would like to see what you do with them.

TeresaClark In reply to SethFitts [2009-08-28 13:25:45 +0000 UTC]

Well maybe I'll have to wait a bit if you add the shipping here, and probably clearance in customs (because they would consider it toxic) it might get expensive for me. I guess I'll wait to see if someone I know travels up there...

I forget you are in Mexico. Surely this product is sold there. May be it will be soon. We have just discovered this product at the store I buy most of my supplies from.

Hmmm we'll see... you wouldn't believe how many things they do not bring -_- but there is always someone who goes to the States and brings stuff

Well if you ever get some or get brave to melt and use beeswax, let me know if you need information.

I really like this! The first thing I notice is the words, then after a second you see the tree. Too bad the gold didn't show though, silly scanners.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethFitts In reply to irethkalt [2009-08-27 11:51:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes but the text is from "The Living Lotus". Knowledge would work better if I had text from a book of learning, which may happen in the near future.
Thanks!

Encaustic has been around in some form for hundreds of years. I've never used it before and really wanted to since I like the effects it produces.
This one is one of the better pieces from my experimenting yesterday. With more practice, I hope to master this medium and produce some really nice pieces.
Thank you!

Very intriguing, especially with the colours and the faded line near the top. I find encaustic works so mesmerizing. (I think it comes from my love of the play of light through the layers). I can see where you would have problems with the scanner. ^_^ It still looks completely wonderful though.

SethFitts In reply to lucidflux [2009-08-27 00:45:08 +0000 UTC]

I think the words came out of a discarded book I have named The Living Lotus. I am also working on an altered book project with this book and a few others that were being discarded.
This was laid on thinly I have some thicker stuff I am contemplating on posting. I need much more practice.
Thank you!
