This is confusing me...when I look at the face I see a woman's face. When my sister looks at this she sees a mans face...so is it a man or a woman!?

Very awesome! This is exactly what I was going for when I made this (and others like it). I intended for the viewer to see the figure as a man or a woman... or maybe both. I see it sometimes as a woman but then some days it seems like a man.

very nice. 2 things
I was really drawn to the face. It is simple and frankly generic. But when put into context of the overall composition, I find it completely captivating. I can't make out an expression, but I so dearly wish to do so.
secondly, the body is truly creepy and beautiful. Those sharp outlines are so subtle and the color transfer from light to dark is wonderfully done.
I really do like this a lot. nice work.

The face is meant to be androgynous but not hermaphroditic, in other words I want the appearance to be either masculine or feminine and to be different for every viewer. The expression, or lack there of, is also meant to be different for all. Some may see it sad while others may see contemplation.
Thank you!

would it be safe to say you mean it to be illusory in a visual sense, or merely interpreted in differently in a critical sense?

I had finished a painting a couple years ago and brought it along to a guild meeting for critique and feedback. I was a bit surprised when someone used "he" in reference to the figure as I saw her as a "she", I still do.
So, going back to the question, I meant the figure's gender to be different for whoever looked at it. And if you are curious, I see this figure as a she.

I've always wanted to try working on linen! Did you prime it with anything first?
This is so beautiful. I wish there was a way I could describe how much I admire your work.
And I wish I could be as good as you... *Cries*

I used a translucent ground to prime the linen. Some linen products come pre-primed with a translucent ground. I think it could have used more coats of the ground after I had begun painting, the linen is so absorbent! I will definitely share any tips as I perfect the technique.
Thank you very much! You are too kind for saying so!

I knew this was raw linen as soon as I saw it, stunning work, (I need to use transparent primer on linen more, I have a thing for the tone and texture, pencil and acrylic on raw linen is so tempting too!) Anyway, very powerful piece again, you always capture real 'presence' in your work....

I had been inspired by artist Arthur Price to paint on raw linen. I have had this linen for a couple years and finally got the nerve to stretch it and paint on it. It is a challenge sizing the material as it is very absorbent.
I am pleased you like it!
Thank you very much!!!

Just featured this one in my journal too [link]
Had a quick look at Arthur Price and loved what I saw. Linen really is wonderful to work with, I did a commission on linen, sized 2.5 metres by 1.5 metres.....now that was hard! Kept having to tighten it, was like a sail at one point!

I can't understand, how can ppl sometimes create such a powerful art like this, with some "simple" shape and colours. Gorgeous!

As always, it is simply gorgeous.
How is it that you make a simple cloaked figure standing on a yellow backgroud so intriguing?
