My Entry for 's Monthly Theme "Marine Animals".
I had so much fun photograghing these guys at Blackpool zoo a few months ago. I've never really tried taking photos of animals underwater before (unless you count the wild manatees in Florida) but I loved how this one turned out. Penguins look so graceful underwater
. They almost look like they are dancing 
.Anyway, enjoy!

First of all, I FREAKING LOVE PENGUINS!!!! Other than that, it looks good. Difficult to get a good picture of penguin, let alone swimming. Although, I have seen others that are better photographed and not looking like it did a belly flop into the water. But overall, if I didn't know if this were an amateur or professional, I'd say it was done by an experienced amateur. There are a few things that are out of line with this picture which gives me that statement. The penguin is in a peculiar position. The frame is out of place. The lighting is good. But in my mind, it says "bad timing.".

Although I have to say, you've not told me how I can improve the picture just said what you've liked and disliked about it. How could I improve? I have to say, though I have asked for critique I do find the whole "belly flop" thing a bit silly. I can't control what the animal is doing. The creature just happened to look that way when I took the photo.

It's one of those "...what?" moments when you look at this not knowing who took the photo. To me, it looked like someone dropped the penguin and after it was in the water, it tried to swim for the surface. That's kind of what I saw. I have a weird way of thinking about these kinds of things. It's natural for me. XD
One way to improve is to wait for that true moment that you know is right. I'm not saying don't take pictures and then take only one that you think might work. Photography is like science. You experiment with many photos to see which one best fits the empty space. Tricky huh?

Gosh. Thanks so much for the critique. I am not a professional at all and I am an amateur. It was a spur of the moment shot and not actually timed hence why it may look a little odd and the penguin was close to the top of the tank. But I will take on board everything you've said so thanks

Such a nice blue colour! The angling/positioning or whatever to call it looks very effective and you really have captured a great pose! It's such a clear photo too; I can't not have glass showing when I attempt to take photos of animals under the water. (Sorry my comments aren't too helpful. >_<)
