Description Ezra made it down to the lake in good time. He found Gilligan with little effort, and asked him if he knew anything about a giant coatalafish named Ol Whiskers, or any unusually large coatalafish in the lake.

"You've come to the right 'gro, boy," Gil said with a short cackle. "Come with me, there's only one place to talk about this, and that's on the lake."

Perfectly willing to accompany the older wyngro onto the sparkling water, Ezra followed him to a tidy outbuilding, where Gil began rummaging around in what looked like an old sea chest. He pulled out a long purple cape, looking at it quizzically.

"Eh, can't remember who gave me this thing," he mumbled to himself. "Never wore it. Hang onto that while I see if I can find what I'm after." He tossed the garment at Ezra, who shook it out and admired it. Sturdy, comfortable fabric, nice drape, lovely color, and ooh, pockets on the inside!

"This is a wonderful cape!" he couldn't help but exclaim. "You should definitely wear it."

Gil snorted, but smiled. "Oh good, yeh can take it off my hands then," he said without glancing up.

"That's very generous, Sir, but I don't want to take your-"

Gil laughed out loud. "Bah! Kid, I wouldn't wear that thing if you paid me. Take it. AH!" He turned, holding up a small bundle. "Here we are! Notes and drawin's from a week long expedition noodlin' for big coatalafish. Was younger then o'course, but yer welcome to look over these so long as yeh return 'em in good nick."

"I promise," Ezra said, sliding the slightly faded documents into his pack. He had donned the cape, hesitantly at first but he liked the feel of it so much that he began to hope the old man had meant what he said, because he'd really like to keep it. "How do I look?" He struck a pose.

Gil smirked. "Can't tell if yeh look gallant, or like yer goin' to a fancy dress party. It suits yeh." Without another word he grabbed a fishing pole off a hook on the wall, where several were lined up, and tossed a pair of oars to Ezra. He led the way to the dock and untied a small rowboat.

Gesturing at Ezra where to sit, it was clear this seasoned 'gro had taken the tiny boat out more times than anybody could count. He slid the craft expertly into the water and soon they were in a part of the lake half shaded by big trees, with the fishing line dangling in the water and Gilligan in fine form, rambling off story after story.

Now and then, Ezra looked up from his note taking with a small smile. The old 'gro was full of wisdom, for sure, but he was also full of tall tales. If nothing else, these were entertaining, so he dutifully recorded the pertinent details. Perhaps he'd assemble a collection of stories for publication.

"So I took the little wyngling out, in this here boat in fact. No idea she had never swum a stroke, can you believe it? I tol' her about that big 'un and after that she was a-scare't t'get in the water. They're in there, sure, but it takes a long time for 'em to get s'big, y'see? They need places t'hide, and plenty o' food, so the lake ain't just crawlin' with monsters. I'd say there's prolly more than one, but I'd also say there ain't that many at such a size!"

"Do you remember the wyngling's name?" asked Ezra, on the vague thought perhaps he could ask them how they remembered Gil's story.

"'Course I do, she came teh see me durin' the candysweet party we had 'round Warptide. All grown up now, pretty little lady, still kinda timid, wassername? Eudora, that's it."

Ezra wrote it down. Perhaps Alma could tell him where to find her.

Suddenly Gil leaned forward at speed, nearly upsetting the small craft as he grabbed for the pole. "HEHEHEHEEEH WE GOT ONE" he crowed in triumph as Ezra righted himself and made sure his pack, which had the notes from Gil and also Bite in it, hadn't fallen overboard or gotten wet. He stowed his notebook in a hurry and watched with fascination as the old gro pulled up a small fish, about a pound or so in weight, with a wide mouth full of whiskers.

"This here is a coatalafish, young'n," Gilligan said, holding out the catch for his fascinated student's inspection. "Now, look here at the whiskers, they..."

The two spent several hours on the lake. Ezra felt like he'd learned a lot, though perhaps not as much about giant coatalafish as he'd planned. He went home with a new cape, and a new quest. He'd interview Eudora next, if he could find her.
