I can always admire interesting full color work, once in a while I try some really minor color effects in my backgrounds but it never gets this elaborate.

Well most people are probably going to be impressed with the amount of effort and probably aren't going to be nit picking so much that they look that deeply into the image. I mean this is deviant art not the Smithsonian art museum, ha ha ha.
I would say in this particular case, go with what the people seem to want; as a lot of your success is going to stem from your fans and your commissionee's and not necessarily how well you follow the rules of art.
Anyway, cool stuff, I can't wait to eventually see the one your working on for me.
