Description Portrait commission for   of his dragonoid character Sorlia! A sassy, swampy gal!

Her species is similar to Apronice here:   Another character from the same commissioner I drew a while back ago (:

Thank you for commissioning me!

Am I reading correctly that this is a girl? If so, I approve of no reptilian mammary glands

This reminds me a bit of how it was really cool how they gave a female voice to the apparently male-bodied alien in Valerian. Animals and aliens don't play by your rules, hoomans!

The race of dragons in my story are called Ascillans. They are warm-blooded, smooth skinned, fur-having, non-mammal, hexapod vertebrates. There are various species of Ascillan on various planets, Olonoraks are on planet Tirak and that is what Sorlia is.

They don't have breasts. Sorlia is tricky in particular because I imagine her having a deep chest like a cheetah (big rib cage for strong heart and lungs).

She is also tall, slim, but muscular. Typically the pointed eyes are her most feminine feature.

She lives in a swampy forest, on her own in the wild, sometimes going into town (but being a social pariah does not mingle with humans). She is strong, tall (6 feet 6 inches) and ferocious. She is also a deadly marksman and the bows she makes are the absolute best in the region but no one really knows who makes them except for a humble shopkeeper that keeps her identity a secret by her request.

She's not even the most "masculine" of my dragon characters. Shestorli is even taller, with a much more muscular build. She looks very very mean, and towers over other characters at just over 7 feet tall (not including horns!) - doorways are her arch enemy (hah, get it... arch...) - she is mated to a significantly smaller dragon named Zhron, but despite his shorter stature and slimmer build he is the meaner of the two. Shestorli is the doctor on board Apronice's starship, her hands are extremely steady.

Gender for Ascillans doesn't have any particular physical body type - although females tend to be bigger and stronger than males.

Here's another piece of artwork done of Sorlia, with her lover Joe in her arms.

I've toyed with the idea of really stripping down dog and large cat anatomy and working on building anthros that a true MIX of how the pectorals are shaped and attached because if I'm being really honest I think it's kinda unfair to animals to just stick their heads on human bodies and call it a fair exchange XD

I guess the same could be done for reptiles.

Speaking of which, do you know what group of animals humans are most closely related to outside of primates? >; -3  )

Female reptiles often ARE larger than males, and it would be really nice to see more people incorporate this fact into fantasy species.

I'm a six feet tall female-bodied person, so I commiserate with having to duck under things!!

lol my anthro dragon race has boobs but not mammaries. On females the chest is enlarged because of their fire glands (where the fuel is stored in order for them to breathe fire). It effects both sexes but is more pronounced on females due to the smaller bodies. There's also a bit of species dimorphism as females have slits (not nipples) on their breasts while males do not as with males it gets sealed during development.  It's common practice for mothers to feed a bit of the enzymes (and fuel) their glands to their hatchlings, as it helps speed the development of the glands in their young. So that's how I get around the whole boobs on reptiles thing as they aren't reptiles in the Earth lifeforms classification, but are aliens so don't need play by hooman rules either. They are related to reptiles, but aren't fully cold-blooded though as can regulate their body temperature but not produce heat internally. And no, even though they can breathe fire, it does not mean it warms them internally. Fuel is fuel... like the gasoline used in cars (however the fuel in their fire glands is alcohol based) and it can freeze. However since they can breathe fire, it's easy for them, in a survival situation, to find wood and start a fire with no supplies. Being an alien race in a scifi setting, there's no magic in them or their fire. If they have some resistance to fire, but they can be burnt and if they fall into lava it would kill them.

I give anthro dragons a pass on having boobs and less so on lizard anthro (as I also have some anthro lizards in this universe I've created that don't have them).  And yes I did confuse the character in this piece as male at first.

Female reptiles often ARE larger than males, and it would be really nice to see more people incorporate this fact into fantasy species.

People like Anne McCaffrey make dragons non-magical, I can't figure out how to feel about it. Like, it's neat to explore it in a different way, but at the same time I love writing magical dragons and most of the fantasy art I collect here are those, and couldn't imagine stripping them of it. I think I'm a lot more partial to, say, treating vampirism as a virus and not some mystical blood ritual.

I think boobs are passable on dragons if they have *other* mammalian features, like paws or fur or pink noses. (although that does raise the question, why wouldn't they have multiple teats and no obvious fat except when pregnant, like, say, a wolf or a lion, which they are more like than humans. Speaking of which, do you know what group of animals humans are most closely related to outside of primates? >; -3  )

It's natural coming from a human perspective to read this as male. If the artist really wanted to screw with peoples' heads they could make her eyes big and exaggerate the eyelashes, typical cartoon signifiers for gender when anthros don't have distinguishing anatomy.

Interesting response... I do feel with mine being that they are aliens they don't need to follow any sort of human made animal classification system. There are also feral dragons on the world I've created and they obviously don't have boobs. lol Also about female reptiles being larger... my race are aliens and as I had said they aren't really true reptiles... more like pseudo-reptiles.

As far has "sexualization" I don't mind it that much. In fact I might like it too much. lol Anyway, I feel as being sapient beings they are allowed to look sexy. An anthro female can still look damn sexy without boobs, I just like boobs. lol At first I did not give my race boobs but then the boobs won over and so I came up with a way for them to have them and yet not be mammaries. lol

Also for working on anatomy, I try not to make them look overly human. I mean, my dragon race has 12 abdomen muscles, digitgrade feet, feathers instead of hair. I gave them real ears as they are not an amphibious species as I felt having ears that could be positioned would be beneficial to a race that flies. They also only have 4 fingers on each hand (so they have an octal based numbering system, again I'm a huge nerd).

And as I've said the true reptile based species I've created in my universe do not have boobs.

"There are also feral dragons on the world"

So kinda like a chimpanzee analog?

Yeah aliens are technically wide open, but if you go with the theory that evolution would follow similar paths because certain things tend to be successful  . . .

Heh yeah I'm more likely to prefer Peter Rabbit type anthros and the innocent side of things, so . . . They're allowed to, sure, but if I want the storytelling focus elsewhere . . .

I mean a certain type of anthro spider, around 3-4 ft tall, I've created has six pectorals and 32 ribs, (six arms and hands, per having eight limbs) but that doesn't change the fact that the pectorals look specifically human, and I've done that on purpose to comment in-story about how animals use shapeshifting consciously to look more like humans, because the form is useful. Some animals don't do this, because they have bias against humans. That sort of thing.

There are other spiders that have exoskeletons (and while I know that method of movement with fluid pressure wouldn't physically work at that scale, eh, it's fantasy. Also, I believe lobsters have muscles under their shell in a way that spiders don't, so I may incorporate that and need to look into it more . . . NERD tiem) and this external difference factors into how their society and social interactions go.

Ah, an octal based numbering system would probably be fitting for spiders, too, LOL. Their language goes in literally any direction they feel like. I remember reading a book about Phi, The Golden Ratio, that talked about human societies that used other number bases besides 10.

Typically if a being has the shoulders and chest of a human, I think they will read primarily as human no matter what peripheral things you change about them. Hence my fixation with the idea about adapting things like this:

people.eku.edu/ritchisong/pect…

Now, an anthro wouldn't have the range of motion of a human if they were truly built differently, but that itself is interesting and can be explored. Do animals that sidestep this distaste for the human body get hired more readily for manual labor because they are able to do more things?

I want to do similar worldbuilding with animal dentition numbers and figure out which would be most capable of speech, and which would have to resort to magical ways of writing.

"Yeah aliens are technically wide open, but if you go with the theory that evolution would follow similar paths because certain things tend to be successful  . . ."

That would be, but there was no extinction level event or ice ages on the planet Verratha (the home of my dragon race, Verrathans) and so, true mammals never evolved on the world. And in fact the planet's government bans the import of any mammalian animals that hadn't been sterilized first. This obviously does not include alien people that are mammals.

Another interesting fact about my race is that eating eggs disgusts them. Many Verrathans remember being inside their egg or at least their hatching. They learn to walk on the day they hatched, and learn other things quickly (like how to speak within a few weeks) so they are essentially "born" toddlers.  The egg is considered a sacred symbol to them and so they banned the public eating of eggs by alien visitors. They eat animals that lay eggs but not the eggs themselves (considering that all vertebrate life native to the planet lay eggs). It might seem like a waste (and it is) it's just something they'd never do (eat eggs).
