Description
I have always liked the history of the Balkans of the second half of the XIX and early XX century: however, I know really little of it, and have read more of it from websites and forums rather than actual books.
I have always liked as well the uniforms, equipment and armies of it, so when while as a substitute teacher and some children asked me to draw some soldiers firing at each other, I remembered some of the illustrations of old newspapers like Le Petit Journal and Figaro from the Balkan wars... and did a piece inspired of that. Done with markers in a scrap of paper, then took a photo.
Here, a Bulgarian soldier fighting some otomans.
The First Balkan War ( Bulgarian Балканска война, Greek: Α΄ Βαλκανικός πόλεμος, Serbian: Први балкански рат Prvi Balkanski rat, Turkish: Birinci Balkan Savaşı), lasted from October 1912 to May 1913 and comprised actions of the Balkan league 8Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro) against the Ottoman Empire. The combined armies of the Balkan states overcame the numerically inferior and strategically disadvantaged Ottoman armies and achieved rapid success.
As a result of the war, the allies captured and partitioned almost all remaining European territories of the Ottoman Empire. Ensuing events also led to the creation of an Independent Albania. Despite its success, Bulgaria was dissatisfied over the division of the spoils in Macedonia, which provoked the start of the Second Balkan War.

An excellent illustration, with a real sense of time & place ... and sudden death.

The Balkans! Shabazik, here's a couple old Balkamn anecdotes:
First, Serbian - "Behind every hero - stands a traitor!"
Second: "Once upon a time, God leaned over the golden bar of heaven and said to a Serbian peasent: 'Jovan, you are the best Serb peasant ever, and I am going to reward you by granting you any wish! Anything you want! However, please keep in mind, whatever you wish for, I will give twice of to your Bulgarian neighbor across the border, Ivan!'
" The good Serbian peasant sighed, and finally said: 'All right Lord - put out one of my eyes.' "
That's the Balkans for you, Shabazik! (But, sadly, not only the Balkans)

The Second Balkan War was what gave the little countries in the region the experience they need when Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia over the assassination of the Crown Prince. Kinda wish I could have done a time hop back then to make sure Princip's pistol didn't fire when the royal party drove by a second time.

VERY cool! Big explosions and fighter jets are fun, but sometimes it's the little pieces of battle that are the most interesting. I'm always reminded of that scene from Saving Private Ryan when the American soldier and German soldier toss their helmets at eah other after their weapons jammed. XD

I hate the scene where the Germans brought up that 20mm cannon and started blowing the Americans apart on that German tank.
