Description

Animated video of Honorguard: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gklykp…

Honorguard is my tribute to the awesomeness of historical castles and to a lesser extent classic fantasy castles too. There are two fantasy elements in this design, the primary tower (The Donjon) and the large feature windows on the secondary tower. Fantasy castle designs like this are inspired by architecture outside the medieval period and they’re accentuated more than they were historically, yet they still could have been built with medieval technology.

Everything else in this castle’s design is very historically authentic and functional, with a concentric layout, accurate battlements (Including MACHICOLATIONS!), several gatehouses with multiple portcullis, drawbridges and murder holes. The bailey comes complete with stables, barracks, soldier’s mess, blacksmith, well, granary, tiltyard, animal pens and wood shelters. The main keep is fully designed internally on each level, fully defended with battlements, entry halls that are kill zones with false floors and murder holes, guardrooms connected to the outer walls that are internally separated from the living and administration areas. The undercroft has a dungeon, treasury, cesspit, a cistern, and oubliettes. The servant’s floor has a large kitchen bedrooms and storerooms. The main floor has several feast halls, a great hall and a chapel. The family floor has the Solar, dining rooms and some bedrooms with more bedrooms above, all with their own fireplace. On the highest floor of the main keep before the two towers is a grand Ballroom.

The model was made in SketchUp.

Just got to the part with the false floor.  how exactly is that floor secured in place when the actuay servants need to walk over it?

Still watching your video, just got to the part about the bathrooms. WHy are all the bathrooms located inside the keep? Shouldn't the folks along the walls of and in the courtyard have acess to toilets, too?

Oh, another thing I just realized.  What about the dragons?

No seriously, actually. A dragon could just fly right over those walls and torch (or electrocute, freeze, corrode, or poison, depending on breath type) the entire courtyard.  You should probably watch this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vS21V… A fantasy caste would look very different from a real life castle, simply due to the fact it has to protect against things like dragons and wizzards in addition to soldiers and arrows.

Seriously. If I grabbed the Player's Handbook from any edition of D&D and took a drink every time I came across a spell that could be used to bypass these defenses, I'd probably die.

I'm in the process of watching your second video on this castle, and I noticed how you specifically mentioned that the castle has no vegtable garden or such.  I don't know how often castles actually had gardens, but not havign one leaves it open to a specific tactic for militarily taking a location. I can't remember the name, but I do know it's so old that it was employed in the Bible itself. The tactic is simply to surround the castle or city and starve out the inhabitants by killing anoyne who attempts to brign in supplies.

Okay as I typed that I realized that anyone trying this tactic would probably get pelted with arrows the whole time, but still.

the simple solution to being pelted with arrows and stone during your siege, if your trying to starve the defenders out (the only semi practical way to take Honorgaurd by the way), is to set your picket line just out of range of the defenders weapons, that way you can keep them from getting supplies, and maybe reinforcements, but not have to worry about your army being SLAUGHTERED by the MASSIVE trebuchet that the defenders have

Amazing job and obviously a lot of work. At 1:34, there's a misspelling: Gatehous instead of Gatehouse. Easy to miss. The ramps into the keep are rather steep, but may be limited by the software rendition. Many kudos!

You should export it as a 3D model. I would love to add into a game engine and have a walk around in it. Think of taking a 3D tour through it.

Don't know if you noticed... But your central Keep's roof has a hole in it.  You can see it in the full image next to the Don Jon... The roof above the Solar and Ballroom has no peak to it.

Also... Does the Lookout Tower need 12 stories?  Love it otherwise... Very lovely.
