I had already read somewhere once that in Finland snakes were used to ward off evil and that some farms had a house snake which they provided a room to curl up on their farm in that regard, but I hadn't found the specific reason why. So they believed they absorbed the evil from the soil. That's a nice tidbit of information about mythology, Finnish in particular, that was new to me. Thanks for that! I'm half Finnish as my mother is from there, so aside from my curiosity about mythological stories in general, stories about Finland specifically are of interest to me.
And that adder looks very intimidating, I must say...
