The Demonstration: A story in two parts:

The dark room was packed from wall to wall. Leaders, generals, CEOs, anyone important enough to not be at a location that did not exist to witness something that was clearly not happening. The room was a converted operating theater, looking into a sealed room through a pane of one way glass. An uneasy and unusual quiet remained oppressive in the air as eyes remained fixed on the window in front of them.

A woman stood in the room, eyes closed, seemingly asleep on her feet as she swayed softly to keep her balance. They waited and watched, the commander in the corner checking his watch until it was time.

“If I may have your attention it is time to begin the demonstration. What you are about to see may be disturbing, but it is essential. If we do not observe the threat in action, we cannot take proper steps to address.”

“Release subject B” he spoke, giving a small signal “In a moment, we will be placing a prisoner in the cell. This will give you the chance to observe how the creature acquires more hosts and spreads its influence.”

The cell door slid open a few feet, just enough for a disoriented and struggling woman to be pushed into the room, the door sealing behind her. Sound proofing hid the cries as her lips moved rapidly in protest for the audience to see.
