Description A self portrait I did for Art, created with graphite. Great Scott, did I ever have trouble with this! It wasn't hard to actually get it out... that part was fun, just little things.

The hair I was initially pleased with. It could be better, and the part irks me, but it's still fine with me. I did start to rush towards the bottom half of the entire portrait, because I needed to get it in on time and was slacking a bit...

Heh, the collar is actually white and did have shading. What happened was I got a terrible nosebleed, and it landed right on the while collar! Ugh, so to fix it, I just made it black. And you can still see where the blood was, and how I made it too dark at first. The blood spot looked kind of cool, to be honest, but it wasn't working out.

The big crease is from when someone sat on the board when it was upright. With advice, I ended up adding more hair width wise, and trying to include it into the hair.

The nose, ear and left part of the glasses are bugging me. Heh, I know what I did there, though.

Any comments greatly appreciated, as I will be doing touch ups on it when I get it back.

Great Scott, I love that you used that phrase!

This looks so realistic I thought it might be a photo from the thumbnail. The smile makes me want to smile too.

I like how bright the highlights on the hair are. The hair in general is really fantastic.

I also like how crisp the rims of the glasses look. They look very realistic and it looks like you put a lot of detail into them. I'd think it would be hard to keep from smudging the area a bit and losing some of that crisp look, but you seem to have had no problems with that.

I think my favorite bits of this are the hair, the eyebrows (they look perfect, and seem to be an area many artists neglect a bit), the glasses, and the tie (I really like the way you used value there).

I'm impressed with the way you handled external problems (I'm not sure how else to describe them ) while you were drawing this. The decisions to work with the fact that you'd bled onto the page and it got creased, rather than scrap the thing, seem commendable to me, and like something a real artist should be able to do.

I have one problem with this photo... resize it lol 1.7mb is waaay to big. Otherwise, your perspective is pretty fricken good

Shadow-whisper In reply to Faisa [2006-01-15 02:57:37 +0000 UTC]

I did resize it! It was so much bigger before, just too close-up for a drawing.

this is amazing. the highlighting in the hair is absolutley gorgeous, and so is that smile. beautiful, and constructive critisism is fine, but look at the picture for what it really is. a masterpiece.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I thought it was a photograph. I think it's rather excellent. The top of your head is rather light, but I assume the light was coming from there.

Well done!

Shadow-whisper In reply to SummerCaroline [2006-01-15 03:07:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're correct, that's where the light was coming from.

And thanks for that!
