Description
Had to create this guy for a class last year and create a proposal with him. I got around to drawing him digital recently though.
Below is the proposal I had to make (In the future I'll probably make a reference sheet for him.):

Summary
There are many problems within this world and many people grow up with bad experiences because of this. Sometimes it is hard for these people to get past these traumatic events but they must realize that they can get past these challenges first; that’s where Dark Shade comes in. He may have had a hard time growing up but he has gotten past that to live a double life of Ian Hallin and Dark Shade. Those who know him as Mr. Hallin find him to be a serious but respectable, well-educated college professor; while others know him as Dark Shade a masked protector that destroys the evils that lurk in the darkness. Dark Shade is a wonderful hero who can relate with many audiences, although his main two audiences are the younger ages that grow up with a bad background and Ian proves that they can still succeed in life. He can also relate to older generations that have gone far in their life even though they had a bad background.
Background
Ian with his younger brother, Evan, were abandoned by their mother; leaving them to take care of each other in this harsh world alone. Living on the streets they learned to survive and to have fun by playing tricks on others. As brothers, even though life was tough, they enjoyed being together. They believed that as long as they had each other they could survive in this world. For them everything seemed to be going well until one of their pranks had gone horribly wrong. After the prank the two find themselves running from the police. Ian manages to get away but his younger brother isn’t as lucky. He is taken into custody and soon after is handed over to child services. Ian looks for clues about his brother’s whereabouts and finds out that he is already too late; his brother was on his way of being transferred to a faraway town. Devastated, by the fact that he may never see his brother again, he wonders around aimlessly in the cold rain. Without realizing it, he comes to the city park were the river there is overflowing and this is where his life seems to come tragic end. The last think he remembers is slipping into the abyss before arriving at deaths door. Death is willing to let Ian live if he becomes a reaper to destroy the evils of the world but he sees no reason to live. However, this did not faze Death since he wasn’t really giving Ian a choice in the matter. Death sends him back and Ian is a wakes to an elderly couple who decides to take care of him. Later on in life, he is encouraged to work hard by the elderly couple and he becomes a professor for the local college there. Though being a professor is only his day job, at night he lives the life as Death’s reaper destroying the evil souls that tarnish the world.
Ian appeals to many children who grew up on the streets or without anyone to care for them. Some people can sympathize with him because they to know the feeling of losing a sibling or someone they love. In Ian’s later life symbolizes that even if you come from a bad background you can overcome these challenges and succeed in life if you try.
Appearances
Ian is an average height male who can take on two different forms. When in his normal form he has dark brown hair and serious emerald eyes. As a professor he wears a white dress shirt with black trousers, however at home he tends to where a normal T-shirt with jeans. Due to his appearance in his normal form the audience may find him to be more of a respectable character to look up to.
In his reaper form his hair turns black and his eyes change to ruby. He wears all black dressed in a long trench coat with a shirt underneath and jeans that cover over half of his boots. Most importantly he wears a dark eye mask over his face to help hide his identity. In this form the audience may see him as a mysterious hero and want to learn more about him.
Personality
Ian’s personality changes depending on the form he takes. In his normal form he is more serious and stays calm during certain situations. He always shows respect for others around him in this form and in return they often respect him back. When in this form the audience will most likely also find him respectable and what to become someone who is like him so that they can also have respect from people around them.
In his reaper form Ian is more casual and outgoing. He often reverts to his child hood days and plays tricks on the evil souls before destroying them. This relates to the audience because everyone can have an inner child and it would be fun to imagine how people may react if we were to let that child out to play once and a while.
Powers & Weapons
At first the powers received by Death were unknown but over time Ian was able to activate some of them. He can hide and blend into shadows easily and often make his presence unknown to those around him. Ian has also achieved altering certain shadows to cause illusions. With these abilities the audience may find him even more mysterious and want to find out more about him because of their curiosity.
Ian only carries one weapon, that Death gave to him, to destroy the evil souls. The weapon given to him is a long straight dagger with Death’s symbol upon its hilt. He often keeps this dagger hidden under his long trench coat until it is need. This adds even more of a mystery for the audience because they may think, “Why a dagger, when Death is often represented with a scythe?”
Media &Merchandising
Movies and video games would prove to be the best media to represent Dark Shade. Dark Shade’s main audience ranges between children to young adults who are going through or had gone through bad experiences in their life; video games prove to be the best media since many children and young adults like to play games. For older audience members movies would prove to be more effective since movies can show more emotion and better understanding for the story line.
For merchandising T-shirt designs and posters seem more effective to sell. Audience members often love to wear their favorite heroes on their T-shirts or clothing. Since Dark Shade is respectable in his normal form the audience may look up to him as a role model. With role models people like to hang posters up to always be reminded that they can become like that person as long as they don’t give up.
Conclusion
Dark Shade can relate with many audiences that are going through difficulties or have dealt with problems within their life. He proves to them that even though life can be hard they can still overcome these challenges to make their life better. Since Dark Shade is also a respectable character the audience has someone to look up to and everyone could use a hero to look up to.
