Description *I'm doing a series of pictures for Spring. This will include plants and animals alike! Happy Spring!*

The scientific name for this species is Phidippus johnsoni, or the Red-Back Jumping Spider. This is a female that I spotted next door (yes, our neighbours window) and I decided to take some pictures of her.

...I have no fear!

More species info: [link]

I was lucky enough to go to the book store and look up what species she is.

Enjoy!

I think you may have a jumping Johnson (Phidippus johnsoni), but your female seems to have less yellow than the ones I have..

Love this shot. I'll fave.

awsome stuff, wish we had some of them, we only get the tiny jumping spiders they are black and white striped ones... wolf spiders maybe? we find them on walls trying to camoflage but we can see them hehe

Aww cute! I've never seem them kind before. They sound like jumping zebra's! Wolf spiders I've seen and I don't touch those, just observe from a distance of 6 inches.

I just googled it and they're so cute!! Aww...I've never seen one like that before! Hehehe lucky guess on my end, but it's not like there's a bunch of black-and-white striped animals to pick out!

Wolf spiders do make me nervous! It's the sheer size of them that makes me uncomfortable.

Really? You should be seeing some Black Widows now since Summer's rolling up! But I don't advise you to handle them like a jumping spider!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that! Male's tend to live shorter than females...poor fellow, how old is he?

CrescentFang16 In reply to ShadowFoxxx [2008-03-27 18:45:56 +0000 UTC]

he's 5 we think or 6, thats why i wanted a female because i knew they didnt live as long T_T but poor guy ive been calling hima girl since i got him XD

ShadowFoxxx In reply to CrescentFang16 [2008-03-28 21:31:41 +0000 UTC]

! I don't think he really cares as long and he was being fed. I think females live up to 30 years; ah to be a male spider is unfortunate.

I would have assumed it was a redback and killed it on sight. My bad!

ShadowFoxxx In reply to 2Stupid2Duck [2008-03-26 03:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Ooh I know about your redbacks! They're like out black widows...I don't handle them, but I don't kill them on sight. Let them live!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

2Stupid2Duck In reply to ShadowFoxxx [2008-03-26 12:18:46 +0000 UTC]

I gotta say honestly that I just kill them. I normally respect wildlife but you gotta understand they are like a pest over here. Especially when it is hot and dry. They get into the house heaps. My ex picked one out of her stockings as she was about to put them on once. (That coulda hurt!) Given their numbers, it's a bit like killing ants in the kitchen.

ShadowFoxxx In reply to 2Stupid2Duck [2008-03-27 05:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Wow, are there really that many? You usually find widows during the hot summer, they like your garage. I can spot their webs (I've never had a fear of spiders, even as a child! There must be something wrong with me! ) and tell by the thick, sticky texture of them! You really don't see that many, maybe three or five of them in a single backyard. Not all over!

But I don't like them in my house. That's where I draw the line. I just scoop them up in a cup with a piece of paper and send them out! Tell me, do you have the brown recluse or fiddle-back spiders? THOSE unnerve me!

Pretty much all I get is redbacks, huntsmen and daddy long legs.

We have daddies here by the thousands! I have three in my bathroom that take care of the flying pests. Huntsmen I've never heard of! Sounds deadly!

Kinda cute, too bad she's a spider! But she looks all soft, almost like a beanie toy She's cute from a picture but I don't think I'd be holding her!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowFoxxx In reply to Sleyf [2008-03-25 08:17:13 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe I have no fear when it comes to spiders. The stick idea didn't work because everything was blurry! So, I had to have her on my hand for decent pictures.

Sleyf In reply to ShadowFoxxx [2008-03-25 10:12:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't like the way their legs move so fast , and the way they stop, then suddenly run arghhhhh!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadowFoxxx In reply to Sleyf [2008-03-26 03:39:42 +0000 UTC]

Hehehe I don't mind that! I can spot a jumping spider from dozens of feet! Very docile. I've never handled a tarantula, though!
