So, well, that E3 trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII kept me so busy fangirling and all and I couldn't find time to finish this one... But now here it is!

I don't know why the hell I dig so much drawing Lightning as an angel of all things. Well yeah, she kinda is, but you know, not used to draw nude people. But it's great for practising anatomy and harder poses. That was my main goal in this particular drawing.

Concept is, Lightning's crystal stasis. She said it was a dreamless sleep in the trailer, so I can perfectly imagine her all haunted by chaos and her own feelings of guilt for Serah's death. The feathers of her angel wings are scattered and a bit broken, symbolizing her defeat and subsequently her fall. She's imprisoned in crystal, and the fact there's crystal shards in her body... well, they're a bit similar from a Cie'th. Lightning isn't a l'Cie anymore but we can say, she failed her mission, her Focus. Hence that half-Cie'th reference.

It's dark on purpose. I wanted a shadowy, ominous feel to represent Lightning's own guilt. It's like, taking a look inside her heart. And yet, she still glows. She's waiting for her moment to be reborn and redeem herself.

That quote is the first part of the prophecy which announces her role in Nova Chrysalia as the Savior and most likely involves Hope as well. The whole prophecy says: "When Valhalla consumes the sky, a new star flashes like lightning, and in the heavens twinkles distant hope." So who knows, probably I'll do something about Hope related to this drawing.

Done by pencil, black outliner pen and pencil colors. Effects added by Photoshop.

I've still a lot of working about anatomy. But I'm really pleased with how this turned out. Lightning's so gorgeous, I'm so glad I got to draw her more properly.
