History:

The Endurance-class Fleet Carrier served as the centerpiece of modern New Republic fleets composed of the New Class Modernization Program warships. The introduction of these fleet carriers represented a change in the New Republic's military policy and doctrine. While the Imperial Navy was built around domineering and heavily armed and armored warships like the Imperial-class Star Destroyer, the New Republic chose instead to focus on smaller weapon's platforms supplemented by starfighters meant to play a greater role in power projection.

The Endurance-class was built upon the same basic hull configurations and systems as the Nebula-class Star Destroyer. Although these commonalities disguised the fact that the Nebula-class was designed first as part of the Defender Program, the Endurance-class could also be seen as a Star Destroyer variant that replaced heavier weapons with extra starfighters just as the earlier Venator-class Star Destroyer had been designed to do.

Although the Endurance-class was designed as a carrier, it was also viewed as a command vessel. Task force and fleet commanders often used an Endurance-class Fleet Carrier as their flagship.
