Description The interior of the destroyer was filled with the thrum of the engines and the whirr of the AC system shuffling fresh air throughout the interior of the vessel. As the ship took a slow course, parallel to the US coastline, the cold grey sea churned and washed against its prow.
For FCA2 Yuki Miller (Reserves), it was a welcome coolness on her face. Otherwise it was as usual- her belt was too tight. Her feet were swollen and toes felt bunched. The underwear she wore itched and she could feel her nipples chafe. And as usual, she felt huge. Bloated and swollen like a fat tick, waddling about as if in clown shoes.
Usually someone at her advanced degree of pregnancy wouldn’t be on a warship off the east coast, but since the previous FC had come down with a stomach ulcer, she’d been called to take a trip from the beach to ensure that the replacement was fully briefed ahead of the deployment. It wasn’t the done deal, but with her close by at short notice, it had been allowed to take place to ensure full readiness.
Outside, the spray battered at the Arleigh Burke class ship’s sides, but within there was only the slight roll through the decks.
Inside her considerably sized stomach, the occupant kicked hard and she swallowed, a hand going to her middle there.
“You okay there Miller?” Asked the lieutenant at the back.
“Yes sir” she gulped. “All fine”
She was fine now. The flight over had triggered her stomach in a way no previous airborne trip had, and she’d managed to lose her lunch along the way.
“So, as I was saying” she turned and pointed at the screen, tuning out the general noise of the CIC around her as she addressed the two slapped before her. They’d been going for almost an hour now. “The system will correspond to the GCM in the launch area. With the NIFC-CA up and running, we can target incoming aircraft over the horizon with ease, with the presence of friendly ships or especially aircraft. You should be getting target data from the USS Titan’s E-2Ds when you’re in the deployment area so that will have you covered” A marine biologist by profession, normally the lectures she’d give were on algae blooms, salinity or minke whales, rather than radar and missile systems.
She shifted stance again, squatting slightly to get the blood flowing. She’d have to sit down sometime soon...
“I’m sure you’re going to get to grips pretty well on the journey over, but Ageis can be a tricky system. When you get to the target area, it’s going to be your job to keep the information running between radar and the ESSM GCMs”
There was a small jolt as they breached a swell. The weather outside seemed to be worsening. Yuki felt her stomach churn a little more, the baby inside her overblown middle squirming about.
“Now as for possible OFPOR” she motioned to the screen before her, displaying the twin-tailed fighter . “Bogeys are likely to come off shore bases if the local defence grid sees you as a threat. Expect some buzzing and stalking. Mainstays will be designated Flanker and Flanker-E aircraft. They’re fast multirolers and you can bet they’ll be keeping on top of you and the Titan. Range is nearly 2000 nautical miles, 1910 to be exact”
She knew the various details and specifications inside out, with numbers, loads outs and locations stuffed into her head.
“Those birds are the ones most likely to be buzzing you but if you’re looking at anything dicey then its going to be their strike aircraft” she switched slides to a new image- a bulky swing wing fighter on a runway. “Turns out they’re pressing their older Flogger fighters into sweeping the coast and sea. 810 nautical mile range and a lot slower but they’re bound to be carrying AS “Kerry” missiles which would put us right to the bottom if things got dirty”
She looked at the concentrated faces of the sailors before her. “Radar profiles will be logged but it pays to know what you’re going to see flying out there”
She really should be fulfilling her role and following the ship across the pacific, manning her post. But with a kid in her belly there was no way she was getting deployed. Once they had made sure the FCAs were up to task, she’d be back on the helicopter and heading to the beach.
Or at least, she hoped so. With the weather stating to turn, she just hoped they’d finish in time for her to get a lift back while conditions were favourable. A night onboard in her condition, with a morning flight, was not something she was excited at the prospect of.
Of course, her luck would prove to be as poor as ever.
“Then there’s the Fencers-“

A wonderful Patreon reward by of my character Yuki Miller.
Eager to follow her Marine father into some sort of service, Yuki became a navy reservist a couple of years out of college. Having a deployment or two under belt, she’s found that becoming a mother has put a halt to a lot of it.
