Description

Hi all! I can finally show you my MN duck stamp entry for this year! I had to rush through this one in order to finish it on time, but I think it turned out okay. For some reason the photo didn't turn out the greatest. I took it outside, but the wispy clouds aren't that dark in real life. I didn't get 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, but I don't know where it placed out of 30 entries. Oh well--on to next year! The species for next year is a Harlequin duck, which I'm very excited about--I just need to find refs of those now.

This is a 6 1/2" X 9" acrylic on board. Refs thanks to the WetCanvas RIL and some of my own.

For Sale: Matted with a white mat. Note me if interested.

Bit late to comment, but such a lovely piece this is! Love that big crescent moon, never seen that before on a duck stamp entry (then again, I haven't seen all that many to begin with). Canadas are gorgeous, you painted them really well. Especailly the underwing feathers are pretty much spot on Sorry to hear it didn't place!

Aww, thank you so much! Never too late in my opinion. Lol, I must have a thing for Canadian Geese, as I've made them for duck stamps three different times. Glad to hear everything looks good! I really had to rush through this one to finish it in time.

I love this! It captures the warm quality of autumn as well as the feeling of time passing that always comes with autumn, since we see the geese in flight on their annual migration.

I love it! I love how clean cut the feathers are, and the placement of all three birds is well thought out!Β

Thank you very much! Yes, I had a few different placement ideas of where I wanted the geese and in what pose, but I think it worked out in the end.

The winner isn't that cool IMO.... I like yours better! Now looking at it again, the only thing I might change is have the geese closer. Cut off the wings even, because that way you'd be able to fit much more details into it. Just a thought. It's gotta be hard to paint such a big bird so small. That's the only thing I can think of to try next time. What's next for you?

ShaleseSands In reply to eidolic [2013-09-15 15:50:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well thanks! Yeah, this one was hard to figure out how to fit them all in there! Geese are tricky that way. I think the next goose I paint will be in a swimming pose, because those just seem to fit on the board better. Do you mean what's next in regard to stamp contests?

Are these Canadian Geese? If not they look very similar to it. Lovely job with the details in the feathers and the tops of the trees.

This is really beautiful! I like how the crescent moon kind of fits into the curve of the front goose's shoulder, makes the composition really interesting.

Harlequins are gorgeous and interesting ducks. I have a buttload of reference photos of them if you're interested, I'd be happy to share.

Thank you very much! I was originally going to have the moon slightly different, but changed it to this as I was drawing it out.

I know, I just love their colors and patterns. Never seen one before, as they don't frequent MN. Oh, wow! Yes, I would be very interested in that. Thank you so much for your generosity!
