basically if you're eternal your "spirit" or something like that will exist forever. But your physical form can dissapear (so you die)
but if you're inmortal, no matter how much damage you take you wont die

When you say 'i am eternal' it means you live forever, but you can still die.
when you say 'i am immortal' it means you live forever and you cannot die what-so-ever.
So, not exactly the same, but it's understandable the people get mixed up ^^
