The colors are a bit dodgy, like you said, but the likeness is spot on! Alla Prima can be difficult because if overworked it can get muddy looking very quickly, but once you figure out that balance the technique is quite fresh looking. However, the traditional format looks beautiful too. It's all in how the artist prefers to work. I love the classic look of the traditional technique (with the monochrome underpainting), but I am far too impatient. So I had to muddy my way through learning the alla prima tchnique and I find that it just fits me so much better. I love that fresh look that can only come through that style and it fits my painting artistic language. So find the style and technique that you just sing with and go with it. Something will just click and it will seem effortless to do and the outcome of it will look so natural. That's the way you need to paint. Your skill, talent, and ability is top notch, Steve. You are an incredible artist. I love seeing you stretch into different art because it shows just how talented you really are. Even with the muddy color in this painting, it still shows your talent and skill. I can't wait to see what you paint next!
