I like the ears--they're appropriately elf-like.

very nice, but why didnt you finish it?

I did ... sort of. I was unhappy that I'd made some mistakes in the proportions: I think although it looks human, it's not a good likeness. I felt I'd worked it to a point where it was reasonably finished, but it didn't merit further effort.

Insanely good! Do you always draw only with lower B's? maybe I should try that too...

and Herman Hesse rocks! XD

Thanks: yes, I use just a B now, though I do use different thicknesses of lead, usually 0.3 and 0.9.

ah, so you use mechanical pencils? hmmm... I use totally normal pencils... mostly high B's.... maybe I should try your way too. how long do you take for a picture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shalpin In reply to Ettylein [2008-08-22 00:07:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh try mechanicals - they are so much better once you get used to them. Even the cheapest ones that you pick up from a dollar store work really well.

I'd say I take ... maybe 5 hours or so on average for a drawing. There have been a few that were longer - generally the longer, the better the result. I think I could be more efficient - I've been trying a 2mm clutch pencil recently in place of the 0.9 to try and get more graphite down in less time.

Okay (adds mechanical pencil to her improvement list)

5 hours, that looks shorter than for the most other artists that I watch, but still... I envy your patience, I finish usually max. after 2 hours, mostly 60-90 minutes, if its not done then, I get very, very impatient which you can usually see in the quality of hair and clothes which come at last for me. And I cannot pick up on a drawing after one sit, means when I stop drawing on one day, I won't keep up the work again later. I do not know exactly why, I simply cannot, it feels like I would betray myself from yesterday by editing the drawing today XD

For me, doing it in shorter stints is a key part. I think it's really good after you've done a stint of drawing to just prop your drawing up, maybe with the ref next to it and take some time to admire it and plan how you'll proceed - a lot of the things like proportion problems become a lot clearer once you've been just idly staring at it for a while in a relaxed mood.

Ah, okay... I put it on my list. Sounds reasonable, and Tanathiel says rougly the same, so it must be a key point for successfull drawing.

He, he. Well I am a bit of a fraud. I've only read Steppenwolf and I didn't much care for that, but it was for my wife really.

Ah, I do like a bit of Hesse. I think Narziss and Goldmund is my favourite... or Demian (which is essentially the same story, I guess). Great drawing!

"Narcissus and Goldmund" is my favorite too! We need drawings of all those characters next--the main ones of course, but also all the beautiful women...

shalpin In reply to Adoradora [2007-10-07 03:59:51 +0000 UTC]

He, he. I can't comment there. I am a fraud and I just don't read non-fiction. I did read Steppenwolf when I was in my teens, but I didn't get it.

Adele 'commissioned' me to do a drawing. She wanted Joyce because she was reading Finnigan's Wake, but I couldn't find any good Joyce photos. So I turned to photos of the creepy guys she keeps pinned to the monitor: Neitzsche, Sartre, Hughes, Larkin, Beckett, and Hesse (and I included Proust, as I'd just bought her "À la recherche du temps perdu" for her birthday).
Turns out the best ref I could find was for Hermann (I've told at least one person it was a drawing of Rudolf Hesse, by mistake ).

I might be tempted by the glass bead game. Have you read that? According to Adele, you're supposed to read Hesse chronologically (not that she has).

Adoradora In reply to shalpin [2007-10-07 04:57:49 +0000 UTC]

No, haven't read that one, thought I do have a copy somewhere about and I've heard good things about it. I can see why it'd be smart to read Hesse chronologically, seeing as most of his novels seem to represent steps in the evolution of a few central ideas... social isolation, the veneration of the mother figure, yadda yadda yadda... Pfft, I dunno man, I'm just an art student Guess there'll always be a tiny part of me that wishes I'd been an English Lit student instead. They seem to throw rather better parties, for one thing

All this talk of Adele's excellent taste in literature reminds me that I owe you some commissions. I haven't fogrotten! I'm just... well, I guess 'bone-idle' pretty well covers it.
