Usually I don't write about politics here, but as a European whenever I watch the news about the current presidential campaign in the US I find myself shaking my head in disbelief. Whenever I see people cheering Donald Trump during his events I wonder if a good deal of the American voting public is functioning at the intellectual level of plankton. Not a pleasant thought.... Maybe that's why I think what Johnny said yesterday nailed it:
And after watching the whole ‘Depp & Krauss’ interview I know why Johnny will never be a politician in the classic sense: He struggles to find the right words and to build sentences because there’s so much going on in his head on different levels at the same time. His brain simply is light years ahead of his tongue.
But politicians? Hours of more or less carefully worded public speeches and interviews lacking in content that make you wonder if those folks are able to come up with own substantial thoughts and put them in words without a consultant working overtime. No matter the situation: they keep saying the same phrases over and over again. And IF they come up with something on their own it’s getting worse. Maybe that should be called the Palin-Trump-Disease.

You're not wrong. Whatever my people are worth in terms of intellectual value (not that you can actually, credibly apply one unifying term to our populace as a unified society...) we certainly aren't voting with our brains. If we were, the 'center' of what used to be a reasonable divide between left and right would not be so far entrenched in conservative ideals. Furthermore, if we were still reasonably balanced in terms of our political ideologies, Trump and Cruz would never even be serious contenders for the Presidency. Trump would never run in the first place and Cruz would be disregarded as a far-right, Christo-Nationalist blowhard.
Johnny Depp does speak a grain of truth in that we should never accept anything at face value without rigorous investigation. Unfortunately, we have so many media outlets providing 'commentary' on this or that aspect of our culture that common people are more or less accustomed to letting others think for them. Unless we go back to a state of social awareness where the media simply reports the news and leaves it to us to make up our minds about what it means, the 'truth' that Depp speaks of will always be a vague and murky concept.

Unfortunately we have brats like him over here as well. Every country has it's own nationalist-racist bigmouth.

Yesterday we had here in Germany in several parts of the country elections - and a borderline racist and anti-immigrant party jumped from zero (last elections, five years ago) to more than 20%.
