This is my Secret Snowflake gift for my dearest
I was so happy when I got her name cause I knew exactly what I wanted to draw xD
She designed her own little Gimli version for the Hobbit and I just loved it

Well, in the supplementary story on the Quest for Erebor, Gimli told Frodo & friends Gloin had told him he was too young, even though he was about 60 years old! Movie-wise, he must really have felt the injustice of it all.

Gimli was born in 2879, so he was actually 62 in 2941, the year of the Quest. Fili & Kili were were born in 2859 & 2864 respectively; they were 82 & 74, the youngest Dwarves of the Company. The movie changed the ages of the other Dwarves of Durin's line (Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin) to make them older than Thorin, instead of younger. Thorin was born in 2746; he was 24 when Smaug took Erebor, and he fought in the Battle of Nanduhirion (as seen in movie 1) at the age of 58. Thorin's cousin Dain Ironfoot was at the battle, and only 32!Β
So after all that, Gimli might well have been disappointed to be told to stay at home in the Blue Mountains. However, it might have been prudence on Gloin's part. Thorin's company was setting out on a desperate venture, against long odds. If Gimli stayed out of it he could carry on the line, if something went wrong. All the Dwarves mentioned above except for Dain were unmarried, or at least had no children. If the Quest had failed Gimli would have been the next leader of Durin's Folk in the Blue Mountains!

The information comes from the Appendix on the Housed of Durin, which is in ROTK & served as a bridge of sorts between LOTR & The Hobbit. That Appendix is one of the necessary bits of material for Dwarf fans. The others are "The Quest of Erebor" from The Unfinished Tales, and The Peoples of Middle-Earth, a collection of various background bits with a special chapter on the relationship between Men & Dwarves. Read them and increase your Dwarf-fu!
