100 watchers! ^3^ Up until now, I never thought I'd really get this far! You guys have done so much for me simply by showing that you like my art and are interested in seeing it, and I can never thank you guys enough for that! :'3 So therefore, I'm going to give you all a VERY special treat, something I've never really attempted before... drawing Shaney in another artist's style! o3o But not just ANY artist's style, though... It's in the art style of none other than the great and legendary Bill Watterson, creator of the beloved comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes. I grew up loving Calvin and Hobbes as a kid, and I still look back on the many collection books I have of the comic with my bewilderment of it growing exponentially. It stood as a solid yet abstract definition of childhood and youth for me, and still does to this day. It's the reason why I refuse to work on Saturdays, since those are the days which, in Calvin's ideology, you get up at the crack of dawn to eat sugary cereal and watch cartoons the whole morning, then spend the rest of the day playing away and having fun on your own terms. I may not spend my Saturdays doing exactly that anymore, but I treat the day as the sacred weekend day instead of Sunday because of that. The strip opened my mind to the endless possibilities imagination provided, what kind of worlds and realms it could take you to, all the sorts of things you could do in those wild and wonderful environments. It taught me that the best of friendships aren't defined by perpetuated social constructs or stigmas, but rather the connection of care you have for that person and how much you enjoy being with them. It taught me to speak my mind openly and shamelessly, no matter the consequences (which, unfortunately, hasn't always done me a lot of good, I'll admit... but it's something I still do). Most of all, it really opened up to me how precious and beautiful youth and childhood really is, and to always keep that inner child in you strong and alive, so that true youth will never leave you. It's taught me that and so much more, and I think it's quite suitable that I pay it a very unique yet fitting work of homage. So, to put it as simply as possible, I've drawn Shaney in Mr. Watterson's art style, meeting Calvin. I'm leaving the exact scenario open-ended, for my audience to interpret themselves. I think Mr. Watterson would like it that way. ^^
As can obviously be seen, I could only imitate Mr. Watterson's art style and not trace it exactly head-on. But it does look pretty good, from what I've attempted here. :3 I had to use 2 layers to get the colors in the right way, and it's the first artwork I've created entirely in the chisel tip pen tool! Usually, I only use that tool for my signature cursive S, to sign my work, but it was best required to replicate Mr. Watterson's art style, I believe. There are some parts I feel I could've done better at, like the arms for both Calvin and Shaney, Benny's arm, Benny in general (looks kinda sloppy in design ), and I think Shaney's diaper could be drawn in better perspective than what I did. I definitely would've included Hobbes in this, in plushie form, at the very least, but I really didn't have enough time or space to squeeze him in. Sorry about that. But aside from all that, I think I've accomplished my art goal the best I could, and created just the right surprise gift to all 100 of my loyal and faithful watchers! ^3^ I can't thank you all enough for all that you've done for me! You guys are the absolute best, and don't you forget it!
