Red bat using Sennheiser oil pastels with this lovely photo as a reference, with permission: [link]Oil pastels are sticks, so very hard to get details in with; used blending stumps for that.
Used 24 x 32 cm pastel paper, but trimmed off the edges a bit.
Unfortunately I scanned the picture after using fixative which had made it extremely shiny, especially the black areas. As a result, the background reflected and did not scan well. It is in reality mostly black with vague outlines of plants. Next time I use oil pastels I will need to scan *before* fixing.

There's a tv show and book series for Silverwing. It's kind of like Warriors, but with bats. Shade Silverwing is a silver haired bat, and his friend Marina Brightwing is a Red Bat. Marina gets a metal band on the forearm area of one of her wings. She got that band by humans, and in fear of the humans, she was banished by her colony. The book series includes Silverwing (book 1), Sunwing (book 2), Firewing (book 3), and Darkwing (prequel to all the books), and they're all written by Kenneth Oppel. The tv series is a short, one-season series about the events of the first book. It's not very accurate but it's entertaining.

Marina is meant to be a red bat, just like Shade is meant to be a silver haired bat, the species are just given different names in the books (Brightwing and Silverwing).

I've only used pastels a few times but I know what you mean. Hard to get a fine edge with those

how precious I just love bats they are so important to the environment I go bat watching alot and we have them in my neighborhood. Ive even taught people in my neighborhood about them we have brown bats
