Except for Jess being kinda cut off, and the hiding birch kinda piercing the light area, I can't see anything awful awful about the composition. It's just the sort of blah that comes in every other doodle people make. I won't pretend to be a composition expert.
And you're a rat owner, I have to ask - how plausible is it that a rat with a poison barb on his tail wouldn't stab himself with it sooner or later? I mean, rat's tails are super flexible and shit, he isn't totally safe...
I sort of always had the image in my head like those new Mouseguard books, of mice who were no more anthropomorphic than biped and dexterous... And who could probably count more than five.

HMM, Actually they aren't that flexible! They can't whip their tails around to their face on a whim or anything, they're all drag! Although I guess swinging it around with any bit of weight would end up in some personal damage, yeah XD

Here's a quickie analysis of this piece and the ways you can fuck with it further if you want to keep going at it... either by changing the angle, size, Jess' positioning, or the slender birch that cuts the composition into chunks. Now that I can see all the elements, I can rearrange it - in both music and art, I'm a better doctor than a creator, I should probably start doing music criticism again in my spare time.
If you ever need to learn, I credit any knowledge of color and staging I have to my time on stage crew... trying to coordinate the stage actions of a whole chorus on a multi-level set and figure out where to light everything without it being garish or too much magenta... you get a sense of how to tell a story visually. That and Capra. Capra and Toland. Always venerate the gods.
I assume it'd get stuck between something, I always assumed in my head that barb had hooks for added nastiness, but it's probably much smoother... And who knows? That weight on the end of it would probably tip the balance in favor of momentum, you whip your tail back and forth your tail your tail back and forth, it'd just keep going until it hits you in the leg. γ½( κͺΠ΄κͺ )οΎ

Seriously, between Redwall, Pern and Ga'Hoole, I naturally assume my fantastic fantasy worlds have Mediaeval lifestyles and monasteries and shit sort of out of necessity through constant death (or at least owl nazis).
