I've always found charcoal to be very challenging. You pull it off quite nicely

There is a nice soft feeling to this drawing. I love her eyes and rather wistful expression. Her earrings are rather cool too!

I agree with Green Kite...smudging isn't bad...and if that were a real woman standing in front of you she would use a blush brush or paint brush to blend the charcoal further...I use to do charcoal animal portraits,,,it helped define the shadows and hair strands. Anyway, you should feel proud of your achievement, this piece is beautiful.

Go to your local store like Walgreens or even Supermarket and look in the make-up isle for women,,,or even a craft supply store and get to different style paint brushes One thick and puffy, one thin for fine lines.

ohh !! really thanks
I also need charcoal PEncils soo yeah lol more detail needs to be put into eye and such
and what are those plastic sleeves called ?that u lean on while doing charcoal ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emuzin2 In reply to Shaoxiong [2010-04-15 00:08:36 +0000 UTC]

You're welocme. I don't know the exact name....plastic protectors,,,or you could even use transparencies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shaoxiong In reply to Emuzin2 [2010-04-15 00:13:09 +0000 UTC]

ye ,i really need some sort of thing to lean on ..when i colour a patch of black and go over it with my finger the black just tones down soo badly ~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emuzin2 In reply to Shaoxiong [2010-04-15 00:18:09 +0000 UTC]

when you draw...is it mostly sitting or standing....defy gravity,,,sometimes putting to much pressure on a charcoal piece will make it your hands sweat and the moisture gathers more powder...while not drawing anyone specific object...practice your own techniques over and over until you know just how far above your picture you should be...but again, as i suggested, the fun of any medium is blending...good luck...hope i've helped.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shaoxiong In reply to Emuzin2 [2010-04-15 00:21:37 +0000 UTC]

i sit
standing hurts my back .im tall
but hey i've never thought of the moisture bit
After Charcoal im going to buy some ink !
cause ink is really spontaneous not as much blending i suppose but is much harder =O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Emuzin2 In reply to Shaoxiong [2010-04-15 00:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Inking is cool...when I started with ink, it was to justify the means of cleaning up or illustrating my watercolors...I thought I was hot stuff back in school...but really that is how anyone defines themselves. Ink can be tricky..less is more at first...unless your going for the whole abstract...oh crap i've now splashed and blotched colored ink where it shouldn't be. LOL..much harder to rectify than pastels...good medium though.

Smudging isn't always a bad thing as long as you manipulate them in the end for toning.

I look forward to seeing more works coming from you.

charcoal's a hard thing to work with, i would know. i had to do a giant self portrait with it. but you did a good job with it! it just takes a while to get used to.

Shaoxiong In reply to rockin-out-loud [2010-04-13 01:37:33 +0000 UTC]

ye thanks dude really appreciate it
im thinking of doing a bigger portrait ..since is easier to smudge in a small radius

haha the bigger, the more space you gotta fill! if your going bigger, you may want to grid it.

oh, i will!
oh yea, and the grid is extremely light and you can lightly draw it out before and then charcoal over it. i think that's it that i can remmeber =/
