Description "The Carrier Pigeon didn’t return home in 1853. She was a ship out of Boston headed for San Francisco, but she was wrecked against our rocky coast the evening of June 6th in heavy fog seven miles north of Ano Nuevo."

". . . In 1872, the United States built a lighthouse on the 50-foot cliff at the point to warn other ships of the danger. The lighthouse is 115 feet tall, and it was equipped with a five-wick lard oil lamp. In 1888 that was changed to burn kerosene. A Fresnel lens made up of 1,008 prisms standing 16 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter magnified the power of the lamp in order to reach the ships sailing by."

Excerpts from "How Pigeon Point got its Name" by Joan Levy archives.smdailyjournal.com/ar…

The lighthouse can be found on California Highway 1, 27 miles north of Santa Cruz, just south of Pescadero.

I think it's safe to say there are tragic stories linked to most if not all lighthouses. One day I'm sure you'll find yourself touring one of these historic structures.

It will probably happen during my college years. I'll be free from my parents and free to explore!

True; sometimes it takes a tragedy to get things done.

Yeah, I've lived near lighthouses, most of my life. They all have stories.
