Well, well, well, after almost a hundred years of existing, it finally happened. As of January 1st, 2024, the mouse himself and the animated short he first appeared in has entered the public domain. Well, the earliest version of Mickey became public domain. The current version is still copyrighted, but still, this is a monumental moment in animation history. Everyone's been making fun of the mouse already (like me) because at this point, he's a representation of Disney's corporate greed and bad decision making. I mean, he's literally the company's mascot. And now with this version of the character free to use, I'm interested to see how he'll be handled by many whether it's satirical parody, nice innocent fun, or go down the Winnie-the-Pooh path (Blood and Honey is a sin upon mankind). The possibilities are endless.
