Muhammad Ahmad was a man who proclaimed himself the Mahdi, which is a person who will come to redeem islam before the day of judgement. He founded a state in Sudan and resisted Ottoman, British, and Egyptian forces using his Ansar, or the followers of the Mahdi. While he only was active as the "head" of the state for about 4 years (1881-1885), the state lived on under the command of the new Khalifa, Abdallahi ibn Muhammad for another 14 years (1885-1899), until its conquest by Anglo-Egyptian forces. The Mahdi's influence is still present in modern Sudan, and he has a great grandson.
The Mahdist State is know for it being a precursor to Sudanese nationalism, brutal use of Sharia Law, and founding another form of belief in Islam
