We figured out why Gherrek, a Warsong orc might view birthdays as 'just a day' whereas Karagar viewed it as a big thing and got him the lil party

Frostwolf Orcs (like Karagar) are a fairly small Clan and live in an incredibly harsh environment. The struggle for survival was very real and very difficult and with the Frostwof young being raised communially by the Clan, they were all part of a big, extended family. And so, a birthday became a day of great importance, as it meant you'd survived another year and the Clan was stronger for it.

The Warsong Orcs, Gherrek's Clan are a much larger Clan with a far higher population than the Frostwolve as well as a far more regimented and militarized mindset, not to the degree of the Blackrocks though. Their young are raised in small creches overseen by older Orcs who raise and start their training. And so a birthday for them is just 'well done, its another day closer to your compulsory military service' and lacks the emotional importance of the Frostwolves, hence why Gherrek seemed a bit nonplussed when Kara threw a party and got a cake.
