Description
That Friday evening was probably one of the happiest Heidi had been in a long time. It would have been better if that stupid red Werewolf wasn’t there, but she had to admit. If Eliana hadn’t been there, Clint wouldn’t have been as fun.
I can definitely tell he looks up to her. Heidi thought Weird, You’d expect him to look up to Ethan or, no, He does look up to Neal. well, you can admire more than one person.
Heidi had teamed up with Adeline. Heidi had never played soccer before that, but she knew Adeline had been on a summer team a long time ago. So, she was actually quite decent.
From how Clint always went on about working out and being really active, you’d expect him to be better at soccer. A sport he’s in. But if it weren’t for Eliana, he’d have no chance at all. Adeline was beating him left and right.
I actually forgot that she was good at this game.
Because the teams were so small, none of them were goalies. But that red werewolf may as well have been goalie. She didn’t exactly carry her team, more like, kept it from dying. Because she was so darn good at guarding.
Heidi also didn’t contribute much. But after she finally got it, she wasn’t terrible. She never got a goal in, but she did steal the ball from Clint a lot. Also, she kept on forgetting that you’re not allowed to use hands. That’s what cost them the most points.
But dang, Clint does take this seriously. He won of course, obviously, but he was just like Adeline’s dad when it came to sports. Sure, her friend’s dad never played, but he was a professional sports couch potato. If that counted.
Heidi chatted with Adeline a bit when they got tired of playing. Them as in her, Adeline, and Eliana. Clint was still raring to go. She just watched Clint and Eliana hash it out over something… she was not paying attention to.
So, her friend and never-will-be-friend didn’t know each other that well. But they didn’t find it weird to spar and just fight to see who’d win. Adeline thought it was darn hilarious to watch. Kept on saying how Eliana should come over to her house and mess up her brothers a bit. Which they all laughed at.
Finally, it was seven o’clock. Not that late, but late enough for Heidi’s strict parents to want her back home.
So, they all waited for their rides and left one by one. Apparently, both Clint and Eliana lived actually pretty close. Clint walked, but Eliana’s dad had offered a ride because he was on the road anyway. Heidi’s mom was the first to get there.
On the road, Heidi told her mom all about it.
“We played soccer with two of us on each team. Clint was pretty wild, but also pretty bad at the game. Adeline was also so much better than I expected! Like, she should join that team!”
Heidi … brought up the wrong subject.
“Are you going to join any sports? Now that Adeline is there with you, you two should find something you like.” Her mom took every opportunity to get Heidi and her brother active. Don’t forget that they were actually more active than most people Heidi knew.
“Well, Adeline and I were thinking about joining the swim team. I checked the dates, and it starts in about a week and a half.”
Her mom smiled and nodded, “Yeah, that sounds fun.”
The rest of the car ride was boring. She basically just mentioned a few things that happened. Leaving out the small detail that Adeline was now friends with a maniac.
Should I tell her about Adeline now being Omega? She thought, Nah, it doesn’t affect her. If it’s really important, Adeline’s mom will tell her about it in like, the next ten hours. Probably gonna ask what an Omega is.
“Okay, so your dad is working a bit late tonight and your brother is in his room working on his school work. Do you wanna come with me to the store?” her mom asked.
“Nah, I wanna finish my homework before I forget to.”
Heidi walked through the front door, took off her shoes, and went straight for her bedroom. She hung up her backpack and jacket, got out her homework from potions, and immediately got to it.
Gideon was being abnormally quiet. She wasn't going to question it. Heidi would gladly take as much time away from that brat as she could.
She was halfway through it, just finishing answering the safest way to store unfinished potions when there was a loud bang coming from her brother’s room.
Heidi leaped over her bed, she swung her door open violently and banged on Gideon’s door.
“Gideon! You were told to stop it! When Mom and Dad find out you won’t be the only one in trouble!”
Gideon was not a wizard. He didn’t have a drop of magical blood in his body. Their Mom was a Werewolf, which Heidi honestly found ironic, and their dad was a human. No sorcerers in their family. Maybe they had one distant relative, but the point is, Gideon had no magical talent and no hope for it. He wasn’t even a Werewolf at the very least. He was human.
World’s most annoying brother, closely followed by all of Adeline’s brothers. He was convinced that he was going to be a master potion brewer one day. Constantly trying and failing at making spells. He even acted like he could hide all the cat potions he made. He might have one dog potion somewhere.
His annoyingly over-optimistic behavior had led him to actually believe he would be successful in his goal. Kept on saying, “I just need to find the right teacher” maybe it was a good thing he was still homeschooled. Keep the rest of the world safe.
“I’ll have you know that nothing broke this time!” Gideon yelled through the door.
“Like that’s reassuring,” Heidi muttered, “Let me in.” almost yelling the last part.
The door opened, showing her brother. Where he used to have a pale white face and messy blond hair. His face was covered in ash or something like in the cartoons, and his hair was sticking back due to the explosion.
Her little brother stepped aside, letting Heidi in the room. He walked over to his little desk-table-thing and cleaning up the mess.
The table had a small potions kit on it. Some random dinosaur legos that were now broken, and a burnt library book.
“I don’t want to get involved with this,” Heidi muttered loud enough for Gideon to hear. “I better not get in trouble for this Gideon, or you’ll regret it.”
I should probably ask him what he was doing at least. She thought as she walked back to her room.
Thankfully, when her parents came home, they didn’t blame Heidi for not watching her younger brother. He was twelve and was supposedly old enough to not be an idiot. Gideon was now banned from video games for a few weeks.
Heidi drew for a long time, before getting too bored. Weekends were really weird now that she went to public school. In a way, she kinda had more free time. Maybe she could spend Adeline’s first official weekend with her.
She pulled out her phone and started texting Adeline.
-Hey, do you wanna do something this weekend? I was thinking we could go swimming or something-
Adeline responded almost immediately.
-Uh, depends on the time. I already made plans for tomorrow-
-Well, I’m fine with any time really, it would just need to be for the pool closes or something-
-Well, I’m most likely gonna be free around 3 or so, we could go at 4-
-Yeah! Sure thing!-
Heidi paused for a bit,
-What are you doing tomorrow anyway? Just curious-
Seems like Adeline paused for a bit too.
-Well, you know how I’m Omega now? Eliana offered to teach me how Werewolves act and basically how to avoid getting bullied.-
Well, she thought, I suppose that is pretty good. But I can’t believe she made plans with Eliana before she did with me. Are they hanging out more? No, it’s fine, if it weren’t for Eliana, Alpha would have fought Adeline. Eliana helped Adeline by drawing attention to herself.
As much as Heidi hated that red Werewolf, she couldn’t tell her to back off. Eliana defended Adeline from Alpha. That should be good enough for Heidi.
Heidi texted back.
-That’s helpful of her. I’d help, but I honestly don’t know anything about Werewolves except my instincts-
-You know, you can come if you’d like. Were hanging out at my house, not her’s. I suggested that her place would probably be less crazy and she did agree. But my parents didn’t want me to go to her house until they know her parents.-
-Um, I guess I could ask, but that’s gonna be awkward you know. We don’t exactly get along you know?-
-Yeah, I know, but could you learn to? You guys actually have so much in common!-
-Well, we’ll see.-
Heidi woke up at eight that Saturday morning. Adeline always complained about that being too early, but Heidi couldn’t sleep any later than that.
Her and Adeline’s parents agreed to letting Heidi come over along with Eliana. Two of Adeline’s brothers were at some friend’s house and three of them was at their first wrestling meet. The three of them could just sit in Adeline’s room while her two brothers that were left played outside. But knowing James and Andrew, they would never leave them alone.
Heidi’s mom drove her to Adeline’s at eleven. There was already a red van in front of their house.
It was probably Eliana’s, she must’ve gotten here a second ago, but there was nobody in the car. Maybe her mom is talking to Adeline’s? They don’t know each other, so she could imagine her being like Heidi’s mom.
Heidi got out of the car and walked over to her best friend’s house. She took off her boots and winter coat and walked in. She hadn’t bothered to knock for years, this was basically her other home.
She walked in to be greeted by Adeline’s mom. She was standing in their living room talking to a bearded guy that Heidi didn’t recognize. He seemed to be about their parent’s age, maybe a bit older, but his beard kinda made him look even older than that.
“Hey Heidi, Adeline and Eliana are in her room.” Adeline’s mom told her.
Before she could finish, Adeline slid down the hallway and caught herself on the island counter in the kitchen.
“Hey Heidi!” she yelled.
“Hey, Adeline!” Heidi called back.
The guy with the beard held out his hand for Heidi to shake. “Hey there Heidi, nice to meet you! I’m Chris, and you already know my daughter!”
Ah, yes, Eliana.
Chris seemed nothing like Eliana, yet, everything like her at the same time. He was really polite, and Heidi could already tell he was really goofy. Though, considering how Eliana acted, she expected her to come from an all Werewolf family. This guy was human.
“Uh, hi there, nice meeting you too I guess.” she half laughed.
Heidi turned to Adeline, who was now accompanied by Eliana. Her huge bushy tail brushing the ground. Her dad walked up to her.
“Now I’m gonna pick you up at three, okay?”
“K,” Eliana said quietly.
Her dad hugged her shoulders with one arm. “Call me if you need anything.”
He walked to the arctic entry and waved to Adeline’s mom. “Nice seeing you again! Let me know if you ever want to come over for dinner sometime!” and he left.
Adeline broke the silence, “Soo, apparently my mom knows your dad already. Didn’t see that coming.”
Adeline’s mom walked over to the kitchen. “Yep, I didn’t expect I’d ever see him again. He knew your dad and I when we were in college. I didn’t even realize the Byrnes’s were living in the same town as us.” and she went on doing whatever she was doing.
I’m going to forget that happened in a few days. Heidi thought.
Heidi turned to Adeline, Eliana wasn’t behind her, apparently, she had slunk over to Adeline’s room at first chance.
“So, what are we gonna be doing?” Heidi asked.
Adeline shrugged, “Eliana just said that she’d teach me how to act like a Werewolf. She didn’t exactly explain how.”
“ATTACK!”
Heidi jumped, she knew that voice belonged to Andrew.
She and Adeline whipped around to see Andrew running after Eliana, nerf gun in hand. Once he got up to her, he grabbed her right arm and started yanking at her. Bit of an embarrassing move to watch, but she knew it hurt all the same. Heidi stepped to help, but when she saw that Eliana’s face had barely changed, she actually found it funny.
The red Werewolf hadn’t even flinched. She was staring at him, a little confused and a little concerned. She looked to Adeline for guidance.
“Um, would it be looked down upon to fight back at this younger-than-me-child?” she asked, forcing down a laugh.
Adeline did laugh. She ran up behind her brother and pulled him off. Heidi knew the drill and ran into Adeline’s room. Eliana followed her, and once Adeline had peeled her brother off her, she bolted to her room with them and slammed the door.
“What’s the use of that gonna be?” Eliana asked, “He could just break it down.”
Adeline shook her head, “He’s not a Werewolf, he’s human.” she panted, right before locking the door.
Heidi remembered the pain of Adeline begging for a lock for her door. Only after her youngest brother was born and she had seven brothers did her parents finally agree to get a lock for her door to keep them out.
Adeline walked around Her and Eliana and sat on the desk beneath her bunk bed.
“So, what did you have planned for today?” Adeline asked.
Eliana shrugged, “Well, I honestly don’t know much about Werewolves.I’m the only one in my family, so you can tell I wasn’t raised by one.”
Adeline made a confused face, while Heidi couldn’t contain her confusion. “You’re the only Werewolf in your family? Isn’t that like, not how it works? You either have all the Werewolf genes or none of them. Are you adopted or something?”
Eliana laughed and shook her head. “Nah, my mom’s a Werewolf. She and my dad split when I was little. For some reason, I never bothered to learn about. Samara and Aidan are human all the way through, but you’d think they were just hiding their ears if you didn’t know them. They act like bigger Werewolves than me.”
Samara and Aidan must be her siblings. Heidi guessed.
Eliana turned to Adeline, “But I can tell you how they think. You see, you’re the Omega. No, no matter how much Werewolves think they’re doing it or- or not doing it, they’re gonna pick on you. Even the lowest of the low, social outcasts such as myself, pick on Omegas. Now, I’m not gonna pick on you. But like, as an example, the last Omega, you saw me defending him that first day of school. But while I was fighting Neal, I really wanted to fight the Omega too. I didn’t even bother to learn his name. It’s pure instinct.”
Eliana paused, Heidi noticed that she spoke more confidently, her stutter calmed down when she ranted.
Eliana kept on talking about things Heidi already knew. Her mom was also a Werewolf, but unlike Heidi, she was present in her life. Heidi apparently knew more about Werewolves than Eliana did. Although Eliana acted more like one than she did in her opinion.
Later, Adeline suggested going outside and hang out in the snow. Eliana was all for it, enough so that Adeline had to stop her from breaking the window.
“I thought you didn’t know much about Werewolves.” Heidi commented.
Eliana gave a short laugh and rubbed her neck, “Hey, I’m just trying to say that windows are unnecessary.”
Adeline laughed even more as they all got in their snow gear. Heidi had to borrow an extra pair because she didn’t think they’d be going outside. Eliana had apparently thought the same thing but refused to borrow any. Heidi noticed that she didn’t even have gloves. All she wore were huge black and pink snow boots and her red sweater. She didn’t even have a hat on at the very least.
“You sure you don’t even want to borrow gloves?” Adeline had asked her.
She shrugged, “Well, I guess my hands do get cold easily, sure I guess.” Her dark red tail wagged slowly, not like a dog's, but more like a cat’s. Only proving my point that this Werewolf is crazy. Heidi almost said out loud.
