Oh my, Fluttershy looks so sad 
But I do like the dream-like, mysterious quality which lies in this. It's also a nice effect, how the picture seems to turn into giant "pixels" on the sides.

I've always had a certain aesthetic which I lean towards. Sometimes a piece might seem "dark" because it is based on some poor mood or emotion I've experienced (like this one), but I like to think I'm a generally happy person. Probably, it is more automatic: Some set of circumstances conspired to have me prefer crooked angles in my art no matter the subject.
