This quote ... This is how Connor seems to see his whole life. Even later when he talks to his Assassins. Connor feels obliged to everything he does. Including becoming an Assassin. Yet anyway, as far as I see from all the known Assassin biographies: One does not choose to become an Assassin. Fate doesn't ask. So it didn't ask Connor as well.
A really nice idea with young Ratonhnhaké:ton.

I might interpreting wrongly but when young Connie had the vision he saw the assassin sign, shown by Minerva ( hope I remember right, it was Minerva) that he was believe she was a spirit ( she even agreed to called that to encourage Connor to believe) and Mohawk ppl respect the Spirit highly and no question ask they follow what ask of them, like a calling card for his fate. The Clan mother released him what was another sign this is his duty and not a choice. He is the Chosen one but not by his own decision to do so. He is been granted to try to save and protect his ppl in this rev. war and from that moment on this thought was guide him what ever he did. Became an Assassin was a way/help to fight his war, fulfill his obligation he is been granted with.
and another things soon as he says " I will do it, I will protect my ppl or try " regardless how old is he ( young Connie about 15) then he feels obliged to protect them, this is his task, like the Homestead missions. He offers peace to those ppl but then he feels he oblige to protect them and he does! As you said, all his life he commit himself to others as an obligation.
( sorry for the bad english, not my mother tongue but I am sure you understand what I want to say )

Care for Humanity as well, of course he does, he slowly surrounded himself with honest ppl and families he is not the kind of person who can ignore their struggle in the hard time and actually he is one of them regardless his root.

I think, one could say that yes, he lost his village, but he got a new one. This is one of the main reasons why I like the Homestead missions. They make the ending a little bit more positive. Achilles' letter makes hope rise anew.
