This is a random question, but how do you get the background to be transparent?

I use Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop; on SAI, there's two settings it gives you when you save a png- the second one gives a transparent background.
On photoshop, I just select the transparent option when making the blank canvas, or I delete the 'background' layer that's basically a white fill.
