We know we do not hail from the darkness. Our stories tell of ancient heroes who saved their peoples by finding ways to hold it at bay. The Glen was saved by druidcraft, sight and hope given to its people by glowing evergreen fungi. The people of the Lake were saved by divine providence when the gods taught their hero the secret to calling the shimmering light from its waters. But if it is said that the Glen was saved by nature and the Lake by the gods, then the Vale was saved by men. A clever craftsman created a system of enchanted mirrors to deliver the light of the sun past the deadly Surface and into the welcoming earth below. Thanks to that craftsman's ingenuity, Brightvale is considered the closest reflection of ancient civilizations before they were driven beneath the ground. The fields of the vale teem with ancient Surface crops and its people still worship the ancient gods of sun and moon.

Not all is at peace within the vale, however. It was built upon the fertile ground at the precipice of the Deep Tunnels, many of which now belong to the raider tribes that call themselves the Deep Ones. To them, the vale's light is a blaspheme and its bounty fair game.
