When I saw the thumbnail for this picture, I thought it was Photoshopped or a 3D rendering. This bug looks almost too colorful to be real.

It does kind of look like one....but do moths lay their eggs underground?

Okay then....Well I'll believe that too for now, until I get a chance to really research what it is.

Okay thanks! I'll get back to you on what I find...maybe we can combine what we find to get a decent theory of what that thing is.

I looked it up the other day and it is a Squash Vine Borer. We just recently grew some pumpkins and noticed that they were dying. When I was reading about them I found out they lay their eggs in the stems or roots of squash-like vegetables and so that explains why that happened. It also says that they go through a metamorphsis stage like moths and butterflies which explains the cacoon I found it in.
