Description This is an awesome bug that was in my garden. It started out as a pod like thing and suddenly became this. At the moment it is drying its wings so that it can take off.

I have found out what the bug is with help from Ahsatan2.
It's a squash vine borer here's the site if you want to see more info on it [[link]

When I saw the thumbnail for this picture, I thought it was Photoshopped or a 3D rendering. This bug looks almost too colorful to be real.

It does kind of look like one....but do moths lay their eggs underground?

Yes, I believe some of them do.

Okay thanks! I'll get back to you on what I find...maybe we can combine what we find to get a decent theory of what that thing is.

I looked it up the other day and it is a Squash Vine Borer. We just recently grew some pumpkins and noticed that they were dying. When I was reading about them I found out they lay their eggs in the stems or roots of squash-like vegetables and so that explains why that happened. It also says that they go through a metamorphsis stage like moths and butterflies which explains the cacoon I found it in.
