The stallion took a deep, measured breath and turned his head back the way he’d come. The long, winding road undulated behind him like a sandy snake. It disappeared over a slope and vanished into the horizon. He sighed and lowered his head to take a sniff of the wagon tracks and hoof prints that patterned the road.

“Follow the dirt road due west,” the old mare had told him at the last village he’d visited. “But be careful. Most of the dragons have been cleared off or killed, but there’s always the chance of an odd rogue or two.”

Oh, he’d boasted of being able to take care of himself, but the old mare had given him a long, measured look that spoke volumes. She said nothing more and returned to her trough of water, drinking deeply.

That had been four days ago. When he’d first struck out for the farm, it seemed like a grand old idea—a way to escape from his current situation and start over. What he hadn’t counted on was how dismally long it was taking to get there!

With a huff, he looked over at the long stretch of squash and sunflowers that grew on the side of the road. Maybe he’d been mistaken; maybe this place didn’t exist at all, and everyone he’d talked to was humoring him. Maybe he was on the road to another farm entirely—one not so different from what he’d escaped.

A shudder rippled across his skin like a thousand gnats biting him all at once. No. He wouldn’t think of that place ever again.

His stomach gurgled, reminding him that he hadn’t eaten since the morning. Well, a few more miles wouldn’t hurt. He wasn’t likely to die from starvation with crops all around. Rolling his shoulders, the stallion picked up his pace. He’d get there … eventually.
