Description
The droid model build by Industrial Automaton (IA) and trough model contract partly also by Cybot Galactica (CG), both rivals of one another and of Sunsystems Droidworks (SD) on behalf of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), this R2-G2 Astromech Droid was specially designed for primary military use and not civil one, which was why he legally could not be bought for any amount of credits inside the Galactic Republic and later the Galactic Empire. Itβs standardized color was an olive green known as Kashyyyk Green, the camouflage color of the world it was first introduced and used. The droid had encrypted programming, so that Separatists could not easily hack and reprogram it, which together with itβs armor and other updates made it a four times as costly in credits then regular standard droids. It was hardened against EMPs and came in two base models for the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), first the Astromech (AM) R2-G2-A1 (AGA), that aided the GAR military personal of Clone Troopers in navigating spaceships, landing craft and ground support fighters and bombers, second the Geomech (GM) R2-G2-G1, which aided GAR ground forces in navigating unknown worlds geography and terrain, yes even directly aided them in the use of their ground vehicles as well. The ability of this droids to make tactical and strategic decisions to some extent under human commanders and also drive different GAR vehicles themselves, allowed them to even serve as auxiliary Battle Droids for the GAR during the Outer Rim Sieges and Reconquest of the Rim, but they often only served alongside organic forces, like Clone Troopers, Republic auxiliary military of systems and worlds, or similar forces, never on their own and always under at least one organic commander with higher rank, as mistrust against to autonomous Battle Droids and Droids in general was rampant ever since the Separatist Crisis had lead to the Clone Wars against the Separatist Alliance, the Confederacy of Independent Systems. While the so called Kashyyyk Green was the standardized color, many aboard of ships had a more white coloring to make them look like clones during the Republic, or later black one, under the Empire.
Similar to the Clone Troopers and other Republic and later Imperial forces they served among, R2-G2 models often came in the same color tones, partly for camouflage, partly also so that allied forces would not accidentally shoot the wrong, meaning allied droids. Primarily used in military settings, the R2-G2 would at the End of the Clone Wars become partially outdated and obsolete, so that large numbers of them landed on scrap piles to be melted down for their resources in massive scrapyards, at least officially, as many unofficially ended up in the hands of smugglers, mercenaries, bandit gangs and space pirates who would use them to bypass and trick authority security forces, from police to military, use older Republic and Imperial codes and data files found in these droids for bribing, or other, more direct criminal activities. Because of this the R2-G2 became also known as crime droids, rim raider droids, cartel droids, syndicate droids, or hutt droids alike. This less then ideal reputation resulted in many R2-G2 droids surviving and continuing service ending up under stricter overall control when they were finally decommissioned, but that did not stop corrupt Republic and later Imperial officers, commanders and other military personal to still smuggle and sell these droids along other equipment on the black market for the right amount of credits. This increased the overall instability and lawlessness that spread further throughout the Rim during the Clone Wars, as already loose Republic control and law enforcement was completely lost and even with later Imperial Military forces never ever truly reestablished in the Rim overall, partly on purpose, so that beside Separatist Remnants and Holdouts, the Empire and Imperials could also claim lawlessness and the absence of order as a justification for the overall still continuing expansion of the military-industrial complex, continually growing military budgets and an ever expending military force of their armies and navies to fight these dangerous threats. While even some inside the Empire and among the Imperials saw trough this charade, many profited to much from it themselves to ever oppose it, even if it financially weakened the Empire overall and prevented civil development in favor of military one.
