Well, you are talking to the right guy when it comes to all things Minolta mount lol 50mm.......1.7? I so need one of those lenses. I have a 75-300, love that lens, too. As far as a Macro lens goes, if you are using a 50 1.7 why not buy a set of diopters??? I use em and I freaking love em, on the kit 18-70 lens. Serach ebay for "close up filters" or "macro filters". They are one of the best investments I have ever made. I will prolly go with a "plastic fantastic" 100mm macro Cosina/Vivitar/Soligor/Phoenix macro lens eventually. tehy are just hard to find, build quality siucks, but their sharpness is unmatched. 100- when ya can find one.
You need to check out DYXUM it is the deffinitive site on the net for all things Minolta Mount, from lenses, to the Sont a100. It is the best site that there is, period.

I go to another critique site..well quite a few actually..and on the most selective site I got my first thumbs down..and it was on this photo! I crashed...I loved this photo..one of my faves actually.. perhaps coming from that area and getting a shot like this was a proud moment for me...and they basically said it sucked! I am so glad I posted it here because I trust and value your judgement much more than theirs! I am also reminded that it matters how I personally feel not particularly what my critics say!

if the image makes you feel good, that's number one. you should feel good about this image... it's technically perfect, or at least nearly... the exposure and such, and it's really nice with the boat passing by. i'm surprised you got a thumbs down... what for? it would make a lovely postcard!

He said it was too hazy (which is nuts..it is impossible to find SF without fog..and this was the clearest I have seen lol) He said composition-too much sky, no real focal point. He said a different time of day and a lower point of light.. He said the only thing that would help it was if I retook it on another day with light coming from a lower source.
But enough of him huh?

They said it was because a crooked horizon??ack, and too much sky and reds not saturated enough and too hazy and should do it another time of day..blah blah blah

I like it hazy. The blue sky looks beautiful (so the time of day is good), and I like the ship in the photo too.
