Description Back in January, I decided that I would be serving a mission for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints. I began working on my papers, and at the same time, started this painting. Well, my papers went through delay after delay. What should have taken maybe a month to complete took me about four and a half months. During that time, I ended up putting this painting aside as I worked on a few other things such as the painting "Reflection of Evergreen." Then, after my papers were done, I sent them in. Normally, it takes two to three weeks for them to process, but I didn't get my mission call for a good 6 and a half weeks. During that time, I started working on this painting again. After the call came, I learned I wouldn't leave for another month. Now, with less than a week left before I leave, I finally finished this painting. Since this painting has effectively taken as long as my mission papers to complete, I decided to name it off of that experience, and the only thing I can think of to sum up this whole ordeal is Patience.

This painting is based on a picture I took while in Yosemite National Park. This doesn't capture the halfdome or anything really recognizeable in the park, but the water here was the most gorgeous thing I encountered there. It was this beautiful rich blue reflecting the deep green of the trees around it, and it was clear enough to see the rocks down at the bottom. So I wanted to paint it.

All in all, I'm really happy with the way this painting turned out. It was worth the wait, and it will be the last picture I do before leaving on my mission.

Made with oils, 11"x14" canvas

Beautiful! I love the water! Very pretty scene How were you able to vary the greens/highlights in a way that they did not blend together?

Lots and lots of paint. Oils like to blend together a lot, and unlike acrylic, you can't just let the paint dry before adding a new layer. For the trees, what I did was start with painting the whole tree almost the color of the highlight (maybe a little bit darker, then I painted the shadows, then I put a lot of paint on my brush of the highlight and dabbed that on, trying to use short, brief brush strokes to not blend it too much with the shadows. If I found I was getting too much of the darker color on my brush, I would stroke it on my paint pallet until it came out and then redip in the highlight color. For the water, I let all the colors blend together, but then went over with a thick white doing a similar trick, but then going through afterwards and blending where necessary. Then I added in extra shadow where needed. I hope that helps you in the future.

Thanks for the advice! I only use acrylic now, and I really like it. But sometimes I find the colors blending, so I will take note of your tips! You have really mastered oil techniques!
