Description Samurai armor (displayed in kawagoe-Hisory-Museum)

Samurai armor was pursued not only 'splendor' but also 'functionality' and 'mobility'. Medieval Japanese warrior samurai wore an armor like this and fought in the battlefield.

I don't think i have ever seen actual Samurai armor, it looks very light o:

Awesome!

SheltieWolf In reply to WolfPrint267 [2013-09-29 13:23:52 +0000 UTC]

Surely it's lighter than European medieval armours. But it was not so light, made of iron mainly, totally about 30-40kg.

MegalithArtMalta In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-11-03 13:00:43 +0000 UTC]

Actually their weight is quite similar, with mail armour being lighter probably. Also the armour shown in the picture would probably be used by "high class" samurai. Lower class samurai armour would be more plain.

Thx for sharing

Exactly.
Warriors of lower lank used more simple armours.

Yeesh, that is pretty heavy o.o
Must have really worked out a lot to be able to heft that around and fight at the same time, then again it was spread over them bt still... I feel like a weakling now...

Ancient warriors put on heavy armours and fought in the battlefield. They must be tough and powerful...

Wow! Amazing! I have never seen a true samurai armour in real life! Only in anime/manga like InuYasha. And they were never this colourful in the anime either.

Have you ever worn a armour before? or do you own one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SheltieWolf In reply to ArthasElric [2013-09-26 12:21:38 +0000 UTC]

Samurai armours had various designs and colours. Samurai competed with others in design and colour of their armours. Armours were just the "best clothes" of warriors in the battle field.

No. I've never worn and owned a samurai armour.
But I had trained several years and worn kendo armour when I was training.
Do you know kendo?

ArthasElric In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-10-02 07:47:00 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...there seems to be a lot more stuff about the Samurai armour that I could have never expected to know. I thought it was only used as a protection gear in the battle field. I never though of it as a design type clothing which reflects the Japanese culture and taste.

I see.

Wow! Amazing...I didn't know that you were a master at Kendo. That's really cool!

Yes...they are like fencing right? I have seen them in the Olympics.

SheltieWolf In reply to ArthasElric [2013-10-06 01:53:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Kendo is one of martial arts which originate samurai's fighting skills, like fencing.
But kendo is more aggressive than fencing. When warriors attack, always dash into an opponent and often send flying. Attacks of kendo is sometimes hard like rugby and American football.

By the way, are you using Facebook?
I opened an account recently.

ArthasElric In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-10-06 09:58:03 +0000 UTC]

I can understand. Since you use a bamboo sword for fighting, it would be a bit more aggressive than fencing.

Yes, I do use FB and I would love to have you as my friend, but it has all of my photos and RL friends in it.

Actually samurai armours were more colourful than what foreign people image.
There are various designs and colours of armours and helmets in the samurai period. ^^

Usually we only get to see the red/brown armor with black. Looks more heroic I guess than some Samurai in a rainbow coloured armor.
I take there are even several samurai periods or each clan had their own colours for having such a variety. =O

SheltieWolf In reply to Shing94 [2013-09-26 13:21:10 +0000 UTC]

Not only red and black, but also blue, green, yellow, gold, purple etc...

Takeda Clan and Ii Clan used red armours. It was like military uniforms of them. They were very strong, brave and bold mounted warriors. Enemies were afraid of them and their bloody red armours.

Shing94 In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-09-26 23:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... won't be so impressive in movies when they have more than two colours. Count on media to make things more interesting but not historical right.

Oooh, so that's where those colours come from and why those armor got so famous for movies. Good to know.

Yes. And a mask hide not only his face but also his age. Samurai's sons were regarded an adult when they became 12~13 years old. They fought in the battlefield with mature warriors. They need to hide his age because they must not be played around with by enemies.

METALMUTANT [2013-09-24 18:40:03 +0000 UTC]

this is awesome is it from the Edo period or Feudal period?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SheltieWolf In reply to METALMUTANT [2013-09-24 21:19:50 +0000 UTC]

Edo period was one of Feudal periods.

This one is an armour in Edo period. Edo period was a peaceful times and there are hardly wars. Therefore almost armours were displayed as a symbol of samurai or kept in the box rather than worn in the actual battlefield. Therefore armours in Edo period are reminded in a good condition.
In that museum, there are some armours in Sengoku period. Sengoku period was the age of wars between feudal lords. Some armour were actually used in the war. Some of them has deterioration (maybe because of soil, blood and sweat) and some wounds of weapons on the surface.

METALMUTANT In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-09-24 21:39:58 +0000 UTC]

Edo period was apart of the Feudal period? I didn't know that, I thought Edo was it's own period I'm glad to know though because I like learning new things And ohhhhhh, I didn't know that Edo was a peaceful time and Sengoku was the age of wars. That is really amazing that they were able to keep the armors especially since they were used in wars and have deteriorations and have the wounds from weapons on them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SheltieWolf In reply to METALMUTANT [2013-09-25 14:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The Feudal period of samurais are 1185~1868.
Edo period is the last quarter of it [1603~1868].
There were lot of battles before Edo period. Samurais often wore an armour, and fought on the battlefield. But Edo period was the stable period.

That's really cool I didn't know the entire period was called Feudal, so if Edo was the last quarter of the Edo period, was Sengoku the period before Edo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SheltieWolf In reply to METALMUTANT [2013-09-26 13:12:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes.
Kamakura --- Nanbokucho --- Muromachi --- Aduchi-Momoyama --- Edo
Sngoku period (piriods of wars) is from the last half of Muromachi to the fist several decades of Edo, mainly Aduchi-Momoyama.
There were lots of battles in Japan. Samurais fought for gaining the hegemony.

METALMUTANT In reply to SheltieWolf [2013-09-26 20:33:02 +0000 UTC]

ohhhh ok, so Sengoku was within Aduchi-Momoyama? And what did Akechi Mitsuhide do exactly? Like know he betrayed Oda Nobunaga but I didn't know how or when

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SheltieWolf In reply to METALMUTANT [2013-09-29 14:56:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes.
"Sengoku"[戦国] means...
戦 --- war, battle, fight
国 --- country (=all over the country)

It's from the last half of Muromachi via Aduchi-Momoyama to the first several decades of Edo.
Sengoku was the period characterized by inferiors overthrowing their superiors. "Power and ingenuity" were the best way in that age. It was the same as medieval Europe.
Aduchi-Momoyama was a age of ODA Nobunaga(Aduchi period) and TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi (Momoyama piriod). But Nobunaga was betrayed by Mitsuhide and killed in Honnouji temple in Kyoto when he stayed there. Aduchi piriod ended then. Aduchi castle was burned by somebody.
It's one of mystery of Japanese history. There are some hypothesis. But nobody knows why Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga exactly.
Hideyoshi killed Mitsuhide soon. And he became a new leader of medieval Japan. It was Momoyama piriod.
