Description <-Previous - First - Next->

This is where my train stops at Duisburg Central Station, the platform between tracks 12 and 13.

If you remember this journal entry I posted almost exactly one year ago, you might know that this station is in an appalling condition.

If you've seen this shot of the station's exterior, you might also have to agree that it's not exactly beautiful. And yes, the wall we see on that photo is the one we can see here on the righthand side.

So, after getting off the train, I will keep walking onwards, down the stairs at the end of the platform, and take a look at when the next tram is to depart. That you will see in my next shot.

This is a wonderful photograph... so wonderful, in fact, that I've featured it in the Photography Weekly - Issue 15 . Keep up the great work and I hope the feature brings you some more much-deserved attention.

Wow, thank you very much, I'm flattered! I didn't think too much of this image to be honest...

Oh it's entirely my pleasure I think it's a great image. It's not flashy or fancy.. but it's solid and really well done. The composition and the lines of this are pretty damn spot on. And ppl rarely take photos of the station.. i generally see just the tracks and trains themselves.. so this was a nice change

Hmm... I admit that I did try to line up the lines of the walls etc. with that of the photo, but apart from that, I still get the feeling that I can't predict how the audience might react to a photo... I think "Damn, this is awesome!", put it up, and nobody really cares about it. The opposite would be me choosing this shot for a series of pics, because I didn't have many others of this specific platform, and someone even said that this is my best shot yet... Kinda confusing I must say.

I know exactly what you mean. I gave up trying to predict reactions a long time ago. No matter how I think the audience will react, they generally do the opposite. I'm not quite sure what that means.. perhaps we, as artists, are just not good judges of our own work? Or perhaps.. audiences just don't get it

There's a saying that I'm my own worst critic, so that might apply here... And the audience might not share the same tastes as I do too, so one could combine those, and surprise, judgement fail!

Though I tried getting past this, only to realize that I just can't judge how "good" a photo is.

hah.. yea.. that's a perfect recipe for judgment failure

I've learned that I just how "good" a photo is mainly just by how much I like it. Art is SO highly subjective that actually opinions on what makes a "good" photo are largely useless! I think it's much more of a "gut-feeling" than an actual judgment that you can make. At least that's how I try to figure out my own work. If I get excited about it, it's good.. if others don't agree then it's ok. If they like something I don't, i try really hard to see in it what they do.. although that's generally pretty damned difficult!

Yes, exactly! This pic would be a prime example of others finding it interesting, and me just pondering about what it could be that makes this photo interesting, because I didn't think too much of it. It rarely happens that I find something very cool that others will also consider as nice looking later on... Though the one time I did find something very awesome, it became my most popular deviation overnight, which is rather unusual for railroad pics [link]

Very interesting, specially I like those silver rails on the dark background.

Maybe because it's a very artistic play with a light and shadow...
