Reminds me of Sylvia Plath's "The bell jar". At one point the protagonist is having lunch with the lady that gave her a scholarship and a finger bowl with a few cherry blossom petals is placed in front of her. Having no idea what a finger bowl is the protagonist thinks it is some sort of japanese soup.
