Description Here goes.

I decided to make a set of stories called Tales of the Sugarcube Corner. Mostly, as FiM is basing around Twilight, this set will be about my little Eri. This is to tell more about her, weaving her story carefully into the Ponyville's life without harming the main plot or any other possibly existing fictions. Although, as I mentioned before, I keep it canon S1 as I considerΒ  it the most stable and sane part of FiM. But, of course, it's the time after the "Best Night Ever". Maybe a few crosses with S2, we'll see.

This here is a kind of a prologue, a start. Hope it's not too short, I tried to not be boring.

The comic assumes several things. Some hints for stories to be told in future parts. Also... Eri has been living in Ponyville for some time already. She met many ponies in the Sugarcube corner, relaxing in the evening with a cup of hot cocoa, and some ponies just naturally around the town. She's gotten her warm "welcome" from Pinkie. She doesn't cross path with the "Mane 6" very often, as she is pretty shy and these girls are always into some crazy action, saving the world.

So it's a late daytime, Eri joins Lyra and Rose who listen to Pinkie telling something you already know. Β  Pinkie is curious to hear something too. As Eri tells about her hometown, more ponies come around, confusing the poor filly with unexpected audience. You can spot Berryshine, AJ, Rainbow and Fluttershy, Cheerilee and Twilight. As the stories go on, the night comes, many ponies have gone home (Fluttershy must be scared to go back when it's dark and grabs Dashie to keep her company ). Dunno about you but after I finished this I got an urge to watch the episodes again.

Surely, all the ponies have stories to tell one such evening at the Sugarcube Corner. So it's only natural to share. ^__^ If it goes well, there'll be more about Eri's CM, her mouse, her scarf, her academy years and much more.

Hope you guys like it. Tell me if it's inconvenient to read such a fusion of pages or if it doesn't load right. For longer stories I'd upload 10-columns, it's a bit wasteful to upload page by page, even though it would be fun to make my uploads counter spin like crazy. Some people do put many pages in one column like that, I don't know...

And... I don't think I'd color it all, it would take a month. Yep. Lazy artist.

14.12.14 edit. Wow! Thanks EQD folks. That was sweet, didn't think you'd share a comic. ^__^'
Now I feel like I really have to go on with this. I hope nothing happens to stop me. Next weekend.

IDK. I just end up smudging it with my finger. I mostly do only simple doodles of HTTYD, Minecraft, and MLP.

I guess it means you use a soft pencil. H and 2H are nice, they stay on paper just fine. Also, when I add shading I move from upper left corner to bottom right (yep, I'm right handed) to not mess it up, carefully keeping my hand motionless where it touches the picture. And when it's necessary, just put another paper under your hand to preserve the lines. Quite simple, right?

I love the art, I do, but the delivery of that back story was cringe inducing. She went from answering one question, straight into a monologue that answered a bunch of other questions nobody had even asked yet. It stopped being a conversation and turned into a recitation.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sherwoodwhisper In reply to ChaosDrgon [2014-12-17 19:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was afraid it could be the case. Maybe too short. How else would it go, though, without turning from recitation to questioning? And... as an excuse I could say I didn't plan it as a real comic from the beginning, I only thought about giving some background to the character and then ended up where I am - must think of a plot, a good balance, must seek conflicts and stay "within the lines"... And all for a first time comic. But you're right, of course. Thanks.

I think I like it better uncolored. Β It changes the feel of the story. Β I know I'm reading too much into it, but the grayscale goes well with her sense of loneliness from being an outsider in a new place. Β It's a cliche, but I think it could be nice to gradually introduce color (maybe one character or location at a time) as she begins to feel more comfortable and a sense of belonging in her new home. Β Either way, a good start to a new story.

No worries, I'm sure it will be great however it goes... as long as you are happy with what you are doing then it will be worth reading. Β Good start, and I hope for more, eventually (no pressure, inspiration comes when it wants, and even then sometimes life gets in the way, but once in a while I would like to see more of this comic.)

A bit of constructive criticism: you should take care to make familiar characters quickly recognizable when they are first introduced into the story, unless the point is for the identity to be a surprise of course. When you're making an uncolored comic about ponies, this is a requirement that you should be actively keeping in mind, because color is the primary cue for distinguishing ponies, and you don't get to use it. In this case, I wasn't sure that Lyra was Lyra until I read the author's comments; I think that what was throwing me off was that you drew Lyra's mane as being a single solid color, not two. So my advice is that if you're not going to provide an alternate strong cue (e.g. showing the cutie mark or having somepony refer to the new pony by name), and the reader is to determine the identity by a holistic look at the pony's appearance, you should check carefully that you don't omit any details of that appearance that would reasonably be visible, at least in the first couple of panels including the character.

I don't know if most people are bothered as much as I am by not being sure if they can identify a character, but either way clarity is a good habit to form. And you're already doing pretty well; Rose was easily recognizable just as a head. I want to make sure you focus some effort on further improving this valuable skill.

Stroke by stroke, sketching it together.
Deadline looms, don't you know the watcher's always right?
Even if my pencil choice was perfect, gotta get them all done by tonight...
Fotland, it was meant to be more simple, Lyra is a tale for 'nother night.

I'm drawing them together!~

I guess she wasn't expecting whole 3 season long lifestory about Twilight, simply asking this question xD
I love your style!~I may not be the fan of traditional artwork but it actually adds quite a lot of charm, also it really has nice lineart. Very good job on their faces and anatomy I know it's kinda tricky at times. The only thing I can complain is adding a bit more detail in Sugarcube corner's backgrounds, but I guess you keep it simple to not drag attention away from the characters. Overall, great job.

sherwoodwhisper In reply to JokerPony [2014-12-14 11:19:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I'm sure all MLP artists face the same problem about the anatomy: the 3D-minding model looks great in terms of rules of simple forms, perspective and volume but the original has different style, 2D that isn't perfect for all kinds of expressions (but the existing ones are much more vivid), it takes a careful choice of angles. Balancing between is probably the hardest part for me, sometimes I fail.
