Honestly, I think the positive/negative balance in this picture works really well unfinished. You contrast very heavy darks and larger block shading on the outside against very open white space and simpler "stratchy" shading on the inside. The way the spikes point inward really leads the eye to the focal point of the slanted eyes, darkly outlined and in the middle of a large area of negative space and less "heavy" shading. It's funny, but the line through his face almost makes the image read like it was drawn across 2 pages, even though it wasn't.
