Description A couple of days ago, I randomly said to myself, "I want to start animating again even though I have lots of other things I should probably be doing instead!" So I ended up staying up at midnight yesterday and tonight making this little animation. I'd say it was worth my time since it was fun to do. Honestly, animation is a lot more fun to do than flat drawings (or I have more patience with animation than I do with flat drawings, at least).

This is my first colored animation, I think? Adding color is really annoying since I'm using Medibang Paint Pro to animate (I don't have an actual animation program), so I have to use layers for the frames and stuff, and there was a lot of coloring on separate layers and then merging the layers, and THEN I had to save each individual frame as a PNG file, sooo... I also had to use This Website  to put it together, so that may have lowered the quality a bunch - sorry about that. Animating with an art program is kinda tedious, but it's better than nothing, lol.

Anyway, I wanted to animate a relatively simple movement, but nothing super simple like hair blowing in the wind. So yeah. I'm really happy with how this turned out! It's not super smooth because I was too lazy to add a whole bunch of frames, but I still think it looks okay. The facial expression and the little hair bounce was fun to do. :3

By the way, I would love to hear constructive criticism since I'm still really new to animation and don't know much yet! So if you have any suggestions or anything, please let me know!

You know, your style is very reminiscent of AbsoluteDream . While it is a very close similarity, you have added your own style to this character. The animation is a little choppy and some of the lines on the arm linger... But the expressions of chara kind of balance it out... The hair and necklace react with charas motions and that I like, but it would be a little better if the animation was just a little bit longer.
My best recommendation would be to try and work on the animation for the arm facing the viewer. Other than than, the animation is solid and a good start...

Thank you so much for the critique! <3 It made me really happy to hear that you think my art style is similar to AbsoluteDream's because they're actually one of my biggest inspirations! I know you were just comparing the art styles, but kdjfhkfa-- It made me feel really good, so thanks, ha ha.

I was thinking about making the animation longer or adding a few more frames to make it look smoother, but I was kind of tired by the time I finished it, and since it was just practice, I was okay just leaving it as it was. In the future, I'll try to put more time into making it look smoother. ^^ Thanks again for the advice!

This is pretty nice. I know you for your still images but I must say, your animation looks pretty good. Not as detailed as your other work, however, the animation process is tough so I can understand not putting in as much detail. The expression in the eyes is on point. Everything moves as it should move. You have done very well for your first animation(unless it is not your first animation then good work all the same), and I hope to see more sometime in the near future. Keep on doing the fantastic work and I hope you continue to improve.

Thank you very much for the critique! <3 Detailing it with shading and stuff would have taken me way more time than I wanted to spend on it, and I don't think it would have looked consistent at all, so I thought it would be best to just add color. I'm trying to start out simple with animation, and once I get the hang of it and get an actual animation program, I'll try adding more details. ^^

I'll definitely keep practicing, though! Thanks again!

Yessss, walk cycles are so hard! XD I've only attempted a walk cycle once so far, and it looked pretty bad, ha ha. I'm definitely going to have to work on those.

I kind of do the same thing. I draw all the frames (I use each layer as a frame) with Medibang, and then save the layers as individual PNG files and put them together on a gif-making website. (Honestly, why is it so hard to find a good gif-making website/app??? The one I use is the only good one I could find for some reason, and it isn't even that great.) Anyway, yeah, it can be super annoying because it takes a lot of time and all the pictures take up so much space. Hopefully when I feel more confident with animation sometime in the future, I can buy actual animation software or something. :,)

Same, I'm so impatient, ha ha. I actually have three work-in-progress animations/animation memes at the moment that I haven't worked on in a while... I just keep starting projects and never finishing them, ahhh! XD

whoaa, i just discovered your art through the random deviation button and i gotta say, this looks absolutely awesome, especially for a first attempt at animation!! i really love your style, and i also really like how you drew the clothing and the hair, they way you did the lineart really adds a lot of depth to it!!

also idk if you're working on a tablet like an ipad or a computer, but if you're working on a computer firealpaca is a great program to try!! from what i've heard medibang is really similar, and it seems from what you've described that there's a little bit more animation features in firealpaca than medibang (but im not sure since ive never tried it myself haha)

also a little tip (idk if it applies to your program or not but it applies to firealpaca so i thought id say it just in case), instead of saving each layer as a seperate png file, there's an option in the file menu that says "export layers" and you can just export them all to one folder instead of saving each and every one seperately ^^ also, instead of coloring on seperate layers and stuff you can just move all the layers for one single frame into one folder, and the program will recognize that folder as the frame instead of all the individual layers!! then again, if you're on an ipad or something then this might not work, and idk if it applies to medibang but thought i'd point it out just in case it'll help you!!

anyways great work with this!! ive just been getting into animation myself and i know how tedious it is, but it's totally worth it lol. keep up the great work, and you gained a new watcher!! <333

edit: oop forgot to mention, alpacadouga is an online site where you can put the frames together that won't reduce the size and / or quality (the only downside is you can't make them transparent, you'd have to greenscreen it out or soemthing which is admittedly a lot more work lol)

Shimmer-Shy In reply to KeenQueen [2020-03-02 03:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very muchhhh! <3 I'm really glad you like it!

And thank you for the suggestion! I downloaded FireAlpaca to check it out, and the animation features seem like they'd be really useful. At least it would be easier to convert all the layers to PNG files, ha ha. (Honestly, I wonder why Medibang doesn't have the "export layers" feature? It would be really helpful.) And it's also really convenient that Medibang files work with FireAlpaca! I'll definitely try using it to animate in the future.

Anyway, thanks again! The suggestion really helps, and I appreciate the watch! ^^ And yes, animation is tedious, but actually finishing an animation is really satisfying and totally worth it, ha ha. I think I'm going to have to watch you too because you seem really nice, and I love your art style!!! <3

no prob!!

and im super glad i could help!! i find firealpaca to be super useful so im happy that it was a good suggestion (and yeah, that's odd lol). and yeah!! i forgot to mention that the file types are compatible (in fact i think they're the exact same?? i could be wrong but firealpaca is .mdp files and i think that's what medibang uses as well)!!

and it's no problem-o, im glad i could be of help!! and thank you so much for the watch back and the compliments, that's super nice of you!! <3333

I must say, Chara looks really great in your art style, i love the way you draw their face and hair, so gorgeous!

Animation isn't easy, and even if its a couple of frames i admire how you managed to draw a good-looking character and make it move!

I've used GIMP to make gifs since it's a free software and all, it may be a bit confusing to use and the process is basically the same (loading a bunch of PNG's) but at least doesn't lowers the quality and doesn't have all the restrictions the website you used has. Probably it would be better for you to find software dedicated to animation anyways, but i just wanted to give you another option in software, just in case.

All the right elements are there.

Considering how it was made, I think you have done a very good job.

I think working on the timing would be my suggestion.

As in, use the same number of images/drawing and hold on certain images for a little longer.

With your permission I can try and show you what I mean.

Overall, you have made a very decent gif.

Shimmer-Shy In reply to CatPickle [2020-02-01 04:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! <3 And yeah, I couldn't seem to get the timing right. I tried holding onto some of the images for longer, but then it looked a little more choppy and less smooth. I could have added a few more frames to fix that, but I was kind of tired and thought it looked good enough as it was. XD

You can show me if you want, but you don't have to if it's too much trouble. I think I understand what you mean. ^^ Thanks again for the advice! I'll try to work on that next time.

Copy of the hidden message without gif link

To the best of my knowledge, I think I counted 9 different images.

I see 3 main parts to this gif.

1) Eyes close/blink with the head down

2) The head pulled back, hair jump up and the eyes widening

3) Turn to the right (facing audience) with hair waving and necklace swing

I decided to hold the closed eyes. Like s/he had just let out a big breath or sigh.

As well as the stare forward. (the part right before they are shocked)

Link removed ^w^

If you were going for more of a sleepy head nod, the timing in this gif is a little off.

Shimmer-Shy In reply to CatPickle [2020-02-01 21:58:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah I see what you mean. Rather than a sleepy head nod, the whole thing was supposed to be them being surprised by something (like, they hear something to their side and turn towards it), and the part where they lean forward was just to make the jump more exaggerated. I did make it a little too fast, though.

Anyway, thank you for showing me; that helps a lot! ^^
