I have to admit, when I saw the epic amount of hair? First thought was 'rockstar rapunzel' XD

Hi and thanks! Re-rooting is actually simpler than I though. Just a little tip that I found out - use pliers, it really saves your fingers from getting sore, lol! And I got her head off by putting her neck in front of my heater and letting it heat up for a bout 45 seconds. You can also use a hair drier to loosen up the neck as well!

You're welcome! And ask as many questions as you like! I got a large doll needle. I forget exactly how big it is but it's quite larger than a regular needle. Here's an example: [link] But I got a set of 5 at Joanne's Fabrics for like a 1.58 on sale.

Yeah and they have glow in the dark hair but it always sells out as fast as it comes in...I'm waiting for the chance to get it :3

You're welcome, I really love the colors, I haven't seen any of that hair at the dt I go too, though, maybe I need to look harder. lol. How did you get the original hair out?

Shimmeree13 In reply to MurderShannon [2012-05-05 04:44:32 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I'm actually running out of hair, lol! I've been looking but every one is out of the bright colors. The hair actually comes on a head band!
I got the hair out by running really hot water into the head of the doll to help soften the glue. There is a TON of glue in these dolls heads. Then I scraped the inside of the dolls head with half of a broken scissors...I improvised, I heard that a crochet hook works best. I had to pour hot water into the head several times to keep the glue soft. Then I pulled the hair and glue out with tweezers and pliers (for the bigger, tougher clumps).

Thanks so much! And actually it's a lot simpler than I thought it would be. It's hard work but was pretty easy to actually figure out and do :3

Wow, this looks great!!
I just did my first reroot too, but I used a special yarn for dreadlocks.
That's not a bad idea to use what you did.
Especially to try it out for the first time.
I bet when you are done, with a bit of work and maybe a boil method, the hair will straighten out.
The colors are really cool, and I like how you staggered them.
♥
Keep up the good work, can't wait to see her finished.
I ended up with a huge head of hair too, so no worries.
Once you style and trim it down, she will look fantastic!

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it! I really like the looks of yarn on the MH girls! I'm going ot try that in the future! And I thought it would be cheaper for me to use the dollar store stuff in case I trashed the project halfway through or something but I'm definitely going to invest in real doll hair, I'm sure it's easier to work with than this stuff XD
I really want it to be finished so I can wash, trim and style her hair...it's driving me crazy, lol! I'll have to check out your work :3

You are very welcome!
Yeah, definitely practice with cheaper materials first.
The yarn I found was at Big Lots for $1.
I rerooted all of the hair on a doll with yarn in one day, but I found it relaxing.
XD

this is the only thing I have up right now, really.

Wow, that looks amazing! How did you frizz out the yarn to make it look more like dreads? That's really a great effect :3

BeanSproutMomo In reply to Shimmeree13 [2012-05-01 19:57:49 +0000 UTC]
Actually...
9_________9
it came like that!
The yarn was super neat.
Each strand was varied in color and width, so I thought it looked more like dreadlocks than yarn.
It seems to work great, so I may try to find that again in the future.
I did try to untwist the yarn a bit on a strand, but it really unwove the yarn too much.
The strand came apart easily, so I wouldn't suggest trying to fully untwist them.
You could probably untwist parts, and fluff them out a bit though.
♥
ALSO
The closer I got to the center of the yarn bundle, the CURLIER the strands got.
So some of these dreads are a bit wavy~
I had to use the WHOLE yarn bundle for this head though. I suppose I could have used less, since it's so full, but I wanted a lot on there.
(almost all the whole are filled)

Thanks so much for the info! I really like that yarn you used! I may have to go out and try to find some similar to that. It really looks like dreads, really beautiful :3 I like the dolls to be thickly re-rooted too!

I hope you find some!
Hobby Lobby/Michaels are also great places for that kind of yarn.
