Description The left side of the page are canon hetalia characters. Port is still unofficial. ( this is already worse than Netherland's shadow Dutchman period before Himaruya gave him a face. Netherland showed up several time, but he hasn't a face for the longest time. Now Portugal has a "potential" but not actual character in Hetalia just yet.)

The fans though...we know.

So, this pic. I know that Roma and Carthage were not Iberians. They occupied it for some times (as well as some others) but I think these guys leave a lot on influences. (I don't know why people tends to forget about everything between Roman times and medieval. Every time I learn history, it's always some cave drawing > Egypt > Greece > Roman and then we jump to medieval. No wonder they call those time dark ages.)

I kind of see the shadows of them in the Iberian siblings. In their behavior. even.

(well you know what I think? the head canon disregarding history tells me that Spain is Rome's son and Port is Carthage son. Actually, no. both were Carthage's, then Rome killed Carthage and took the two. Then Rome was too weak to defend them form the goths, so Visigoth and vandals and alans and suevi took them. Then Umayyad came along. Then Asturia started the reconquest)

something like that orz huff huff. ......gimme a break here, trying to fit head canon and history in together is sometime just too much, but I can't do without it.

The mom would be Iberia, you see? But the more controversial idea seems to be that, papa Iberia and Celt get together, then Carthage was being a friendly super cool uncle to the two kids whom back then were kind of nameless. Then Rome kicked Carthage out and took them and named them Lusitania and Hispania (but there were more provinces in the Roman Hispania than two. So there terraconensis and Baetica and Lusitania, before they get divided further into 5, Lusitania, Gallaecia, Cartaginensis, Terraconensis and Baetica again. Lusitania>port kind of stay that way all along. So if I try, this one can work. But there was no where for Spain as one of this region. If anything I'll just put him in Cartaginensis for head canon sake)

Yeah, I'm sorry you guys probably won't get much history out of this post.
And I know it's dumb because I'm the one saying it. but man, I love Carthage face in this drawing so much very much.

everyone can actually skip 2 previous paragraph.

So, who disagree with me about how Spain look so much like Rome? I mean, give him some curls and don't let him shave for a day or two and you will have difficulty telling them apart. (it's the anime character design issue, I know. but shuddap)

and then it's the badass-ness that seems to inherited. ...yeah, all of Rome's badass went to Spain, leaving zero of that to the Italian siblings. And Portugal has that, trading with local forever and oh, by the way this food is great. I wonder who does that sound like.

amd then we have the sadistic-macho love hate relationship between the two. Actually I haven't seen too much of Spain and Portugal being loving siblings, but eh...well... (for the case of lady port, my head canon say Spain is crazy about her and is very possessive) and then they just seems to be tearing at each other's flesh forever.

That's how...
Thanks guys!

Being portuguese myself and an history lover, I have to say that the love-hate relationship between them is COMPLETELY CORRECT, historicaly speaking.
Well, of course we had a lot of rivalry, especially bc of the discovery ages(bc Portugal was the best at discovery! Sorry, I really like my country) and they would probably fight bc the world sees Portugal as a spanish province

J'adore!

Les regards de Rome et Carthage sont tellement expressifs (et ils sont si sexy ), les couleurs et le dessin sont magnifiques! J'aimerais savoir dessiner aussi bien un jour.

C'est un excellent travail, bravo et continue comme ça!

I think, Carthage didn't kill Iberia. He was 'received' in there as well as Fenicia, who passed as well by Portugal :3 Rome 'kicked' them out and slavered Iberia. That's my opinion haha x.x, differente interpretations I guess
~Sorry for any spelling mistakes, I'm portuguese

This is great! And eh...I think Carthage left quite an influence on Spain (I don't know much about Portugal) just not as much as the Rome, the Visigoths, and Ál-Andalus, and Spain even named many cities in its colonies after Carthage. Cartagena, Cartagena de Indias, etc.

I need to review a book I have on the portuguese genetic heritage, but from what I recall Cartage's influence was little to none on Portugal. He inherited a lot more celtic blood from Lusitania (they say that's the reason we tend to have slightly lighter hair and greener eyes than the spanish. Spain has a lot more moorish blood in him)

Shin-Wolf In reply to Birvan [2012-06-16 02:44:48 +0000 UTC]

I do believe that both Spain and Portugal inherited very little from Carthage. (Since they don't seem to like to mix with native either. So by genetic, I don't think we can't count them as cousins) I have absolutely no idea how much cultural influence from Carthage, may be a bit, hope fully some. I was actually amazed by the reaction on Tumblr (I think this got me a few followers and I made a few new friends.) Thing is, their reaction kind of show that they have relatively similar ideas.
(Yet I'm sure I based this on literally nothing? well, Rome-Spain thing may have some bases( mainly their appearance), but Carthage's information is next to nothing so I can't say much)

(oh right I said those head canon thing about him being the dad. I like it but I do realize that it can't be true.)
Oh the other hand, I feel that there is something that was inherited and there's an odd parallel between the two.

(In the end it's just some thing I drew threw together...TT_TT Please don't be too hard on accuracy or historical content. I do like to fangirl with no bases from time to time.)

As always, information is welcome! It's always great talking to you.

I can't comment much on this since I have little to no knowledge on how things were back then
All I know is the remains left behind are mostly from Rome and Iberia's part (and a bit of the vikings in a very specific spot)

I totally wish Carthage to be like that.
Being honest, I'm not sure who the father is. Iberia(I'm not sure if is a man or a woman), Carthage, Celt, Rome...Too many people XD

I think part of the historical coverup, especially regarding Spain was how it was a Muslim country for a while so of course when the Christians reconquered it they were all 'WELL THOSE MUSLIMS WERE BARBARIANS WHO DON'T KNOW SHIT THAT WAS SOME DARK AGES BOI' (when in reality I find it historically to be quite the reverse when reading up on things... mainly because Al Andalusa was super awesome and didn't kill off people who weren't Muslims, and non Muslims actually were able to reach high up into society it was a pretty spiffy place but knowing you doing your own historical research I don't need to ramble to you about stuff like this )
There is a lot of historical bias by people, and the Spanish are super bad at that. Like the taking of South America.
"Aboriginal allies that won the war for us since we promised them freedom from the ruling Aztecs and Inca's? HAHAHAHA YOU IDIOT THAT NEVER HAPPENED IGNORE ALL THE EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY. Oh and by the way this guy who has never been to South America claims the Aztecs thinks Cortez is a God, sounds legit to me."

:I

Yeah, from what I've read, before the reconquista, Jews and Muslim and Christian lives together in peace and all.

But the winner writes history, so.... yeah.

Same thing for Carthage. I have no idea how he really is, since a certain someone left nothing of him.

Quatschmachen In reply to Shin-Wolf [2012-05-18 05:46:01 +0000 UTC]

Carthage is super interesting since he was super best friends with Etruria (well at least one of the Etruscan city states, I guess technically it would be wrong to blob Etruria as one nation since it was just loosley aligned city states but you know what I mean). So it's almost as if there was some sort of fear that Etruria would get back up from Carthage perhaps and ruin the take over plans. But that part of history I'm not too clear on yet so I could just be making things up.
I just remember reading about Etruria and Carthage being bro's and causing lots of angst with Greece.

I always thought that Spain was similar to Rome too XD. And I hope that Himaruya makes Port official soon~ I want to see how he do the relation between England and Port XDDD.
Wow, I love your headcanon. But then, sorry for being so insistent T.T, if Port and Spain were Cathage's sons... they were Iberia and Papa Iberia didn't exist??
And how you prefers Portugal? Like a lady or a man? XDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shin-Wolf In reply to SuzumeMizuno [2012-05-17 14:35:23 +0000 UTC]

See, it's really complicated and annoying to fit everything...

so, I say they're papa Iberia's son and Carthage is the super cool guy from the south.

(Though, Iberia at the time wasn't a united people. They're still divided in many tribes, so in a way, papa Iberia wouldn't have exist, unless you picked a tribe to be him. Mama Celt, however, is arguable, I think. There were also many groups of Celt, if I understand what I read right.)

Portugal...........this is the hardest question. I don't think I'd think this much for any election. One of the way I had it (but it's actually for an AU) is that Port is a girl disguise as a guy.

Now, if she's a girl, We'll have a very interesting (and kind of violent) love triangle between Portugal, Spain and England. (Well, Portugal love England to death, I'm not sure what the eyebrows thinks about her. But Spain is beyond hope with his sister complex)

I know we are all fan girl and man loving another man is totally perfect for us. But I can't see the same dynamic working with Portugal as a man. It's possible that Spain is still jealous of England for being so close to Port and can still be a possessive little brother. But it's still not the same.

So.........orz, I can't pick. Oh right, and there's also all those thing about being parent to Macau, Brazil and many others.

it is and impossible choice. I'll let it be up to Himaruya.

(here's an idea, why can't we just have two for everyone, like humon's have japan and sister japan and something like that = =, so at least they can also be in 2 place at one time and will help a shit load.)
