This is the finished piece from the LiveStream on Sunday, featuring Di. As I mentioned in the stream, I thought it would be better practice to work on my character designs via illustrations? Although this means their design will vary from image to image until I settle on one, I think I'll be more satisfied producing illustrations (and therefore get to work on things outside my comfort zone) then toiling away on a refsheet that takes months to finish.
For those of you that know Di already, you will find that this is a huge redesign. I'm fairly pleased with how most of it turned out. I might make some minor changes, but I think this is really in the direction I was wanting to go. There is more of his design to work on, including the beat-up demonic version you guys know and love.

hnng your sense of 3d-shape is so appealing. What would you say was the main contributing factor that taught you 3D space? life drawing? I'ts an area I want to improve on myself, but now I am using 3D modeling and painting over it to compensate for my lacking skills, I'm hoping that will slowly teach me.

Amazing how it really looks like a mix of trad and digital, really good job on achieving that look. Very very nice work with details, eye is killer in here c: His expression with those bleed like effects, combined with calm and nice colors give out an interesting atmosphere of peacefulness and unrest at the same time. And I like the blur effect, it may seem like a minor detail to some, but not only it is implemented good, it also keeps main focus on Di's face which is the main star in here. Real nice c:

i really love that you kept the sketchiness of the lineart in this versus trying to tighten it up digitally <3 it gives it some really intriguing texture! i think it's probably definitely much quicker to work out a character through a drawing or quick sketch - totally agree. it also lets you play around with telling their individual stories, too [: he has a fantastic design. i can't wait to see more of him!

Dude, this is awesome!Β I love his face and neck, and the details in his scales and the mane running down his body, and the calming white in the color pallet mixed with the cool/warm gray tones for shade.Β Are those vines he's weaving through?Β My eyes are having trouble with his, um, is that his shoulders?Β Or is he doing a major version of the twist there?Β Β

Very handsome!! I love the texture of the lineart as well. Traditional/digital mixtures are always so awesome looking!! This design is very different from the Di we all know so well, so I'm interested to see where it goes from here!
